Swerve Strickland is proud of his match with Will Ospreay at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door. Strickland defended the AEW World Title against Ospreay at the June 30th show, and came out with his title reign intact. He spoke with Sports Illustrated for a new interview and shared his thoughts about the match.
“I’m proud of the story we told in that match,” Strickland said. “It was a perfect whirlwind. It was Will’s first main event pay-per-view in AEW, fans were waiting for it, and people didn’t know who was going to win. Was it Swerve’s time? Or was Will going to keep riding his hot streak and win the title? That’s a match we’ve wanted for a long time, and the timing was right. We weren’t waiting, we wanted this moment. We wanted to see the best–the International champ against the world champ. It was two forces facing off–the two best going at it.”
Strickland is set to be part of Team AEW in Blood & Guts against The Elite on Dynamite in two weeks.
