ZeeWI: Matt’s Broken Brilliance Starts to Decay

For a moment, they were happy. Reunited in misery, brought together again through Broken Brilliance, King Maxell and his family sang in perfect harmony. His father and his Uncle had found a peace with each other again. A peace by force, as his father had finally pushed his Uncle too far – he’d finally broken Jeff Hardy, rendering him obsolete, a mule to be worked to the core, just another Brother Nero.

As Maxell expertly navigated his piano, cranking out note after note of “Obsolete,” the prior months of unrest in the Hardy Kingdom seemed like a distant memory. All that could happen now, it seemed, was the inevitable taking of TNA’s Tag Team Championships from Crazzy Steve and Abyss – Decay – whenever that match came to pass.

But as easily as this moment had come, it would just as easily unravel. Matt had to leave The Compound, signed to a match against Crazzy Steve that would serve as simply an appetizer to the upcoming Decay vs. Broken Hardys tag team battle. Matt appeared nervous, but his wife Reby would soothe his fears by brandishing a sword, hinting that she’d be able to protect herself.

Still, Matt made an error so unbecoming of a genius at his level, that I sit here still stunned when I think about it. Matt would insist that Brother Nero accompany him to the Zone of Impact, to corner him for his singles contest. I personally would have demanded that the mule watch his nephew and sister-in-law, but Matt apparently trusted Señor Benjamin more than Brother Nero to get the job done.

Could it be that Matt is starting to show the cracks in a once-perfect facade that always hid an imperfect design? Has Matt – long aided both directly and indirectly by TNA to do whatever he wants, knowing that no loss will remove him from a title shot, and that no bad deed will ever go punished – finally started to believe that he’s completely infallible? Did his creation of Brother Nero affirm every crazy notion in his head in regards to just how good, and just how powerful, he truly is?

That’s the only excuse I can give to someone willingly abandoning his wife and child, protected only by a gardener (a damn fine gardener, sure, but a gardener nonetheless), especially when warning via premonition told him that Decay planned to invade his house and threaten the King, Maxell. How could he ignore his own thoughts? Why, in that moment, would he choose to not even trust himself?

The gravity of his miscalculation would be apparent immediately upon the start of his match with Crazzy Steve, as, of course, Steve was alone. But Matt didn’t seem to care. In fact, he seemed to be happy about it, as if winning the match was his only concern, and the lack of the other Decay members would make his dastardly road to victory that much easier.

Even after his hand was raised, he carried himself like nothing could be wrong. Only, of course, there was. As Crazzy Steve would tell him, “Decay is everywhere. Including the Hardy Estate.” And after proclaiming Maxell to be “Rosemary’s baby!” it finally appeared to sink in to Matt’s head that he had really messed up.

And, of course, Decay was terrorizing the house. And Reby was forced to count on Señor Benjamin to help her as she hid in the Safe Room. Reby would even be fooled by her own Fake Baby Throw trick, which only had to increase the burn to another level. How could Matt have allowed this entire situation to take place? Why didn’t he bring them with him? Why didn’t he forfeit the match?

Did Matt… want something to happen to them? Has he decided that Reby and Maxell, as precious as they are and as much as he loves them, are only hinderances in the ultimate plan of he and Brother Nero once again wearing the TNA Tag Team Titles? I’m not suggesting that he wants anything horrible to happen, but he sure didn’t seem to think too hard about the situation in which he left them.

Does he realize that, unlike Jeff was proven to be, Reby and Maxell can’t be broken. Maxell’s still too young to have that kind of mental torture work, and Reby’s beauty has always made it impossible for Matt to even attempt it on her. But if Decay was to, say, kidnap them for a while? At least while they’re going for the belts? Would that be the worst thing? After all, he didn’t do anything wrong.

Has the man who believes himself to be completely above any currently constructed system decided that even his most cherished family can be used as pawns in his game of conquering the squared circle, not unlike how he destroyed everything his Brother Nero once represented? Is no one indispensable to him?

Hardy was lucky that nothing happened to Reby and Maxell, but does that necessarily mean he was happy about it? Why would he encourage further Decay presence on his property, through the announced Decay or Delete altercation for next week’s Impact? It almost seems too easy to just blame pride, but is that really it?

Matt Hardy was never the big Hardy. It was always about Jeff. So, slowly, he cheated and stole until he had become a two-time TNA World Heavyweight Champion. When that wasn’t enough, he terrorized his brother until Jeff Hardy faded away, classifying himself as obsolete. And now, all the talk is about Matt Hardy. It’s finally all about him. Fans chant DELETE! in non-TNA shows all over the place.

But as Matt dances to the music of his own parade, the TNA Tag Team Champions are very seriously looking to make a huge statement by taking out TNA’s Royal Family. With Brother Nero a mindless drone, the very fate of the Hardys rests on the decisions of Matt. And if he’s not careful, he may very well lead himself to a very permanent deletion.
