Comment: Usman scored his fifth successful championship defense, and second, against Colby Covington Saturday night. It was much of the same from their first fight two years ago. In this case, it went to a decision and Usman was the unanimous winner. Covington did not appear close to stopping the champion and that’s what he would have needed to secure the win after being dropped in round two.
What’s next for Usman? Likeliest would be Leon Edwards if he can beat Jorge Masvidal next month. If Masvidal should win, Vicente Luque doesn’t sound so appealing. Perhaps this is chief among the reasons Usman has been so openly talking about the idea of retirement. Being away from his young daughter for months at a time when he’s training would seem even more difficult when you’re challenger is just another welterweight and the pay day is meager.

Comment: Covington moved from ATT to MMA Masters in 2020 and feels it will benefit him in the long run. Perhaps he’s set as the #2 welterweight in the division where Usman is just not stoppable. We’ve seen him dominate RDA, Lawler and Woodley most recently, but how may he fare against the likes of Gilbert Burns or Masvidal, his old training partner? He’ll look for another crack at Usman as soon as he’s able but it may take more than one win to get that, although the rest of the division isn’t exactly lighting things up.

Comment</B: By the time UFC 269 rolls around, it will have been nearly exactly six years since Edwards lost a decision to Usman. Since then, Edwards has reeled off nine wins in 10 fights without suffering a defeat. For now, he can’t blame politics or UFC matchmaking for anything, if he beats Masvidal next month, he should find himself ready for a rematch with Usman and his first UFC championship fight.
