Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC Fight Night 133. I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be your host for the evening, relaying all of the action to you just as I see it. Tonight the UFC is in Boise, Idaho for the first time on the heels of last weeks big PPV event. This event is a bit on the uninspired side of things but there are a couple of somewhat interesting fights here. The main event is former heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos returning to action to welcome former WSOF/PFL heavyweight champion Blagoy Ivanov into the UFC. Beyond that it’s a hit and miss, but Chad Mendes is off of his drug related suspension and is back, Sage Northcutt is trying his hand at welterweight again, and the most relevant other fight is probably a featherweight clash between Darren Elkins and Alexander Volkanovski.

Tonight the UFC is on Boise, Idaho, USA for this event so the crowd should be interesting. On commentary we have Brendan Fitzgerald and Jimmy Smith, and I can just imagine the drawing of straws that happened to determine which of the commentators had to make that trip. As for the rules we will be under the new rules, so you need both palms or fists flat on the mat to be considered downed (or a knee of course), extending fingers towards the opponent is a foul regardless of contact being made, and the language around scoring is clearer while encouraging more 10-8 scores. We also have the limited use of replay, so if the ref wants to review a fight ending sequence he can but once replay has been invoked the fight cannot be restarted.

Jessica Aguilar was arguably the premier strawweight fighter back in 2014, but she’s gone 0-2 since joining the UFC and missed all of 2016 as well as being over a year removed from her last fight. Aguilar is in pretty dire straits here and truly cannot afford another loss. Jodie Esquibel has gone 3-3 in her last six fights and is coming off of a loss in her UFC debut against former title challenger Karolina Kowalkiewicz, she also needs to get that all important first UFC win here. The odds are close but tilt towards Esquibel at -145 to +115 for Aguilar.

Strawweight Bout: Jessica Aguilar (19-6, 115.5 lbs.) vs. Jodie Esquibel (6-3, 116 lbs.)

Single leg attempt from Aguilar, switches to a double leg but Esquibel bounces right back up though is still on the fence. Aguilar is after another double leg, she can’t finish it but lands a few more knees to the body as they settle back into the clinch. Body kick/knee from Aguilar, she’s breaking these pocket exchanges with good strikes but is struggling otherwise. They clinch up and trade knees then end the round in the clinch.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Esquibel, 19-19 overall

ROUND THREE: Aguilar comes out aggressive this round and they’re both trying to land punches. Esquibel has some swelling around her left eye, the right of Aguilar has been landing in that area for most of the fight. Another couple of rights from Aguilar find the target. Bit of a combination from Esqubiel and she eats a right after it. Aguilar knees the body and gets a clinch but Esquibel is able to get free quickly. They clinch again and trade knees then break again. Knee from Aguilar, Esquibel keeps ducking into it trying to exit her combinations. Another right from Aguilar lands. Things get a little sloppier and they clinch, both women trying to ice the round in their favor. They trade knees, break and we get another bit of sloppy trading as time runs down.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Aguilar, 29-28 Aguilar overall

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Jessica Aguilar via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28 x2)

That 30-27 seems odd as Esquibel had a good second round. Aguilar on the mic now and says the first UFC win means the world to her, referencing how long she’s been around the sport and thanks everyone for their support.

Mark de la Rosa just had his first professional loss when he fought Tim Elliott up at bantamweight last year, now he’s back at flyweight and looking to show what he can do at his more natural weight class. Elias Garcia is undefeated and making his UFC debut here, he’s trying to make an immediate impact in a division that’s primed for upward mobility. Another close one by the odds, here they favor Garcia at -145 to +115 on de la Rosa.

ROUND TWO: Bit of a head kick from Garcia, De La Rosa lands a couple of counters. Garcia lands a body kick. De La Rosa lands a flurry and pushes into the clinch again. De La Rosa slips to the back and gets one hook in as Garcia drops to his seat. Both hooks in now for De La Rosa and he’s under the chin with the choke, Garcia has to tap as De La Rosa stretches him out.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Mark De La Rosa via Submission, rear naked choke, at 2:00 of Round 2

Mic time for De La Rosa, he says he felt great and reiterates this is his natural weight class. He puts over his wife for winning earlier this month then talks us through the finish. To close he says he’ll fight whoever the match makers want and plans to stay humble.

Here’s the finish. Pretty basic work with the hands, but pay attention to the work his legs and hips do. He gets a serious arch in the back of Garcia as soon as he gets both hooks in and forces the neck into the open for the finish.

Liz Carmouche has gone 2-3 in her last five fights and is coming off of a loss to Alexis Davis, she’s trying to avoid another losing streak and reaffirm her position as a top ranked flyweight. Jennifer Maia is on a six fight winning streak and is the former Invicta flyweight champion, this is her UFC debut and she has a chance to make a big splash and find herself ranked immediately with a win. The odds are with the UFC vet Carmouche to the tune of -140 while Maia’s comeback sits at +110.

That’s it for Fight Pass, we’ll be on Fox Sports 1 for the rest of the evening.

Kurt Holobaugh is on a four fight unbeaten streak and was last seen beating Matt Bessette on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series before that win was overturned due to his use of an IV to rehydrate. Now Holobaugh is in the UFC and looking to extend that streak while showing just how good he is. Raoni Barcelos brings a four fight winning streak into his UFC debut and is similarly trying to make a good first impression on the UFC audience. Holobaugh is the -170 favorite to a +140 payout on Barcelos.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Raoni Barcelos via TKO, punches, at 1:29 of Round 3

The Final Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Barcelos for his work this evening. Mic time for Barcelos, as well as his translator, he says Pedro Rizzo was calling for the uppercut and told him it was landing so he went to it when Holobaugh was hurt. He tries some broken English and says he loves Boise, though it sounded more like “boys”.

Here’s the finish. Right that’s blocked into the left hook that Holobaugh didn’t block wobbles him, he tries to come forward but he’s hurt and the right uppercut hurts him more, a straight right to draw the hands up and another uppercut to end things. Great finish from Barcelos.

Justin Scoggins was once thought to be the future of the flyweight division but has hit a real rough patch lately, he’s just 2-4 in his last six fights and is on his second two fight losing streak during that time. Scoggins is trying to avoid his first three fight losing streak and get back on the winning side of things for the first time in over two years. Said Nurmagomedov has a stellar overall record and brings a five fight winning streak into his UFC debut here, he’s trying to make an immediate impact in a division ripe for ascension. Nurmagomedov is actually your -145 favorite to a +115 comeback on Scoggins.

That fight was tailor made for a split decision coin flip, no issues with 2-1 for either man as it likely comes down to the first round. No interview for Nurmagomedov.

Darren Elkins has amassed a solid UFC record and is currently on a six fight winning streak that has seen him crack the top ten rankings. If Elkins to extend that streak to seven here he could find himself in either a title eliminator bout or an interim title fight next, pending some other fights and situations at the top of the division (get well soon Max, we miss you). Alexander Volkanovski has a massive fourteen fight winning streak going and is 4-0 in the UFC, he’s trying to take out his first ranked opponent here and should he do so he’ll almost certainly find a number next to his name for his next bout. The odds favor Volkanovski at a surprisingly high -275 to a tempting +215 value payout on Elkins.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Alexander Volkanovski via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28 x2)

OK, in what world did Elkins win a round? And no 10-8 first? Questionable scoring, but Volkanovski on the mic and puts over Elkins as being as tough as they look then mentions he busted a rib on Wednesday and had to gut through it. He says Elkins should have been ranked higher than 10 and should have been fighting in the top five but now it’s his spot and he wants a top five opponent. He specifically mentions Chad Mendes if Mendes is able to win tonight, possibly as a main vent for the upcoming Adelaide card.

Eddie Wineland has gone 2-3 in his last five fights and is coming off of a loss to John Dodson, he’s trying to avoid another losing streak that would almost certainly see him dropped from the top fifteen. Alejandro Perez has a stellar UFC record of 6-1-1 and is on a three fight winning streak, technically an overall six fight unbeaten streak, that has seen him crack the top fifteen. Perez is trying to keep that momentum going and start moving towards the top ten. Perez is your -185 favorite against +150 on Wineland.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Alejandro Perez via unanimous decision (29-28 x3)

I’ve probably got the first and second rounds wrong in terms of who got them, but the right guy won. No interview as we’re about to start the main card, still on Fox sports 1.

Cat Zingano was the last woman to beat current champion Amanda Nunes but is on a three fight losing streak dating back to her failed bid for the title against then champion Ronda Rousey. Zingano is trying to avoid a four fight losing streak here that would essentially end any chance at another run towards the top of the division. Marion Reneau is showing the best form of her career recently, she hasn’t lost in her last four fights in was last seen submitting Sara McMann. Reneau is trying to continue that momentum here and take out another fighter ranked above her while moving towards a title opportunity. Given the recent trajectory of both fighters it should come as no surprise that Reneau is the favorite at -130 to a +100 comeback for Zingano.

Reneau is falling short with the power punches, she’s keeping her feet planted when throwing them and isn’t closing the necessary distance. Zingano is landing leg kicks now, avoiding the right and scoring. They trade lefts and Reneau got wobbled a bit but they clinch up on the fence. Some knees go back and forth then Zingano hits a trip and lands in side control. That’s where the round will come to a close.

Zingano is trying to close distance, she gets a single leg after eating some more punches and lands in the guard of Reneau. Zingano gets another double leg into the guard of Reneau, she seems content to score with those then back out if she’s not happy with the guard game of Reneau, smart strategy. Zingano lands a few more short elbows, Reneau just can’t get her guard game going, Zingano is well prepared for it every time she tries to elevate her legs or get wrist control. I’m a little surprised the ref hasn’t warned these two as they’re stalling out a bit. The round comes to an end with Zingano still in top position.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Zingano, 30-27 Zingano overall

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Cat Zingano via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-27 x2)

So Zingano got a 10-8 in there but Volkanovski didn’t? Judges man, they suck. Mic time for Zingano, she’s emotional after her first win since 2014 and says this is for her kid. She says her game was to get a feel for her opponent and trust her coaches and herself, then expresses love for her fans. Asked what’s next she says whoever but wants another shot at Nunes because she already beat her, then wants to avenge all of her losses.

Myles Jury is on a two fight winning streak that has seen him crack the top fifteen at featherweight, tonight he’s taking on the biggest name he’s ever faced and could get a career defining win. Chad Mendes used to be one of the premier featherweights, but he’s just 1-3 in his last four fights, is on a two fight losing streak and was finished in both of those outings. In all fairness those last two fights were against Conor McGregor and Frankie Edgar, but he also hasn’t fought since December of 2015 after he failed a drug test. Now Mendes is trying to prove that he’s still an elite level featherweight and could insert himself back into the title picture quickly. Despite that layoff and the losing streak Mendes is your -235 favorite to a +185 comeback for Jury.

Mendes lands a lunging left hook that drops Jury, he throws a few punches on the ground, Jury turtles up and Mendes tees off until the ref steps in to stop things.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Chad Mendes via TKO, punches, at 2:52 of Round 1

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Mendes for his work this evening. Mendes was a touch rusty but showed no physical signs of drop off, and he’s on the mic now. He says he’s back, seems rather excited by the prospect too, then puts over Boise and pimps his after party. He mentions needing to find the timing and rhythm against a longer guy like Jury but once he saw his opening he exploded through it. Asked what’s next he says Brock Lesnar, then laughs and says he’s just happy to be back and says anyone in the top five is good for him.

Here’s the finish, just no respect for the distance closing of Mendes or active offense from Jury to deter his distance closing.

Randy Brown has gone 4-2 in the UFC and is coming off of a win, he’s trying for his second UFC winning streak while starting to realize the potential people have seen in him. Niko Price was last seen submitting George Sullivan, he’s trying for his second UFC winning streak here at the expense of a touted prospect. The odds are with Brown at -130 to +100 on Price.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Niko Price via KO, hammer fists from the bottom, at 1:09 of Round 2

I’ve never seen that work that way at anything like a high level of competition. Closest was a fight involving Mahmed Khalidov a few years ago in I believe KSW or DREAM. That’s nuts. Mic time for Pride, he says his gym is the future and he can get you from anywhere. He says he trains for this, including those awkward positions because he wants to hit you from everywhere, and jokes that was his left hand and you don’t want his right. He talks us through the finish, then says he doesn’t care who he fights next, any ranking on any notice and feels he’s not going anywhere.

I’m still shocked by that, he caught Brown right on the jaw, with his head pinned against his foot, and when Brown wasn’t looking for it. Unbelievable confluence of circumstances that he took advantage of. Here’s a clip, I’ll have a better quality one as soon as possible.

Dennis Bermudez was one of the top featherweights at one point, but now finds himself on a three fight losing streak. To be fair his last two losses were split decisions that could easily have gone his way, but he’s got to break that skid here if he wants to be a relevant fighter in the division. Rick Glenn has gone 2-1 at featherweight in the UFC but he’s coming off of a loss and is looking to avoid his first losing streak ever. Bermudez is your favorite at -200 to a tempting value bet of +160 on Glenn.

I can see Bermudez taking the second, not sure how Glenn gook the third though. Glenn ont he mic now and plays with the crowd a bit and says he’s happy to have put on a show for them for their first UFC event. He says he was hurting Bermudez with those kicks so Bermudez had to get in and take him down. Asked who’s next he says he wants to spend time with his family then get back in the gym and enjoy the process.

Sage Northcutt is currently on a two fight winning streak but is moving back up to welterweight for this fight, and Northcutt has never won a welterweight bout in the UFC. If he can find some consistency at welterweight going forward he could turn into a player in the division, while a loss might force him back to the severe weight cut he endures to hit lightweight. Zak Ottow has gone 3-2 in the UFC and is coming off of a win, he’s trying for his first UFC winning streak here at the expense of a recognizable opponent. The maturation of Northcutt has been impressive over his last couple of fights. Mic time for Northcutt, who says he got hit really hard in the first round but he recovered quickly and then thanks the crowd and calls them awesome. He says words are powerful and he visualized getting the knockout and thinks his future is at welterweight and asks for people to be more careful with what they say. Even 80’s Hulk Hogan finds this a little cheesy but it kinda works for him.

Junior dos Santos is a former UFC heavyweight champion and one of the upper level in that division for the last several years. Dos Santos was last seen being knocked out by Stipe Miocic in a failed bid to reclaim the title, he’s trying to avoid his first ever losing streak here and defend his top ranking from a UFC newcomer. Blagoy Ivanov has only lost to top contender Alexander Volkov and brings a five fight winning streak into his UFC debut, if he can take out a former champion like dos Santos in impressive fashion he could find himself among the elite of the division immediately. The odds lean towards dos Santos at -185 to +150 on Ivanov.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Junior dos Santos via unanimous decision (50-45 x3)

Needed win for dos Santos but he’s still got all the problems that led to his downfall to begin with. He’s on the mic though and says he’s in love with Boise and puts over the city, and says he doesn’t like these year long layoffs and puts over Ivanov as a worthy opponent. He tells his son he loves him in English the switches to Portuguese to address him directly, then does his own translation because he’s awesome. Asked about the layoff he brings up the time off and talks about the use of his jab against a southpaw which is usually no-no in opposite stances. When asked what’s next he wants a rematch with Stipe Miocic, I hope not because that goes badly for him again.

Relatively sour note to end things on, but it’s heavyweights so it should be expected. I’ll be back next Sunday early morning for UFC Fight Night 135 when the UFC returns to Germany. The main event there is former champion Maurico “Shogun” Rua taking on Anthony Smith, mostly because his original opponent Volkan Oezdemir got moved to a bigger and better fight on a better card. We’ll preview that card as well as review the action from this one tomorrow on the 411 Ground and Pound Radio Show, which I hope you’ll tune in for. Until then thank you for the support, I don’t deserve it but hope one day to have earned it, stay safe out there and keep checking 411mania for all of your pop culture needs.
