Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of The Money Fight: Mayweather vs. McGregor. I’m Robert Winfree and I want to thank you all for being here and following along. While I’ve watched a fair amount of boxing this will be my first time covering it in his capacity, so I hope you’ll bear with me as I correct the errors that will occur. Tonight undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. returns from a brief retirement to take on UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor, both men have multi million dollar purses guaranteed and looks to extend his unbeaten record to 50-0. McGregor is trying to shock the world by jumping sports and taking out the best boxer of this generation with a single professional fight under his belt. This event comes to us from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA with the usual Showtime Boxing trio of Mauro Ranallo, Al Bernstein, and Paulie Malignaggi on commentary for the PPV while Brian Kenney and Sugar Ray Leonard handle the FOX card.

A couple of brief notes before we go too much further. One is that my cable connection has been really unhappy lately, and because Comcast has no legitimate competitors in this marketplace they’re under no pressure to actually fix possible hardware issues that lead to connections being overloaded and resetting. So please bear with me and cross your fingers that everything just works as intended. Also for those unfamiliar with the scoring criteria of boxing here’s a quick summation:

Effective Aggression – Being aggressive gives the impression of dominance, but unless the boxer is landing shots and not constantly getting countered, it’s not exactly “effective.” Judges look for effective aggression, where the aggressor consistently lands his punches and avoids those from his opponent.

Ring Generalship – The fighter who controls the action and enforces his will and style.

Defense – How well is a boxer slipping, parrying, and blocking punches? Good defense is important.

Hard and Clean Punches – To the untrained eye, it can appear as if a boxer is landing a lot of shots, when, in fact, most are being blocked or aren’t landing flush. A judge needs to look for hard shots that land clean.

Boxing uses the 10 point must system but it’s a little more refined here than it is for MMA, doesn’t stop bad decisions but then even a perfect system could be manipulated by Clucky in some fashion. If a fighter is knocked down they lose a point, though a fighter can negate that with enough effective domination through the rest of the round and only lose a round 10-9 instead of 10-8. Each knockdown is a separate point loss, so a 10-7 occurs if a fighter is knocked down twice in the same round. If each fighter is knocked down in a single round they cancel each other out. A fighter can lose a round 10-8 if they lose by a significant enough margin despite not being knocked down.

Juan Heraldez is 12-0 as a professional including 8 knockout wins. He’s in this particular spot because he’s a member of Floyd Mayweather’s The Money Team, but that has him here on big FOX for a fight that will get him more exposure than he’s had to this point. Jose Miguel Borrego is also undefeated at 13-0 with 12 finishes to his name, a big win here would likely see his profile rise just because of the potential viewing audience for these bouts.

Replay shows that the punch did land to the back of the head but the ref missed it. And a few more broadcast issues, in this case I know it isn’t Comcast because everything else is working. Davis on the mic, let’s see if any of it comes through for me. He believes the real damage came before the illegal punch, seems to play off the fact that he just hit a guy in the back of the head. The crowd is booing him but I’m not getting any whole sentences from him. He apologizes for missing weight and says that’ll never happen again. The one full thought that comes through is the tired refrain, great.

Fonseca on the mic, but I’m not going to get anything as he’s got a translator and trying to get that timing with these issues just isn’t happening.

OK, major disclaimer here guys. I’m getting serious stuttering at the moment with both visual and audio, hopefully this clears up but if it doesn’t just bear with me doing my best with what I’ve got for the main event.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is the premier boxer of this generation and has firmly entrenched himself in conversations about best boxers ever. He’s undefeated and held multiple titles across multiple weight classes, he’s also the single biggest PPV attraction of the last decade or so. Mayweather really can’t afford to lose here as a loss to a debuting boxer would put a serious dent in his legacy. Conor McGregor is making his professional debut here, he got this fight by virtue of his star power and reputation in MMA (he’s the reigning UFC lightweight champion). McGregor could legitimately shock the sporting world with a win here, it wouldn’t be the numerically biggest upset in boxing history but you’d be hard pressed to find one of greater magnitude.
