Captain America: Brave New World saw a third week atop the box office during a relatively quiet Oscar weekend. The MCU entry brought in $15 million for its third frame, down a respectable 47% from last weekend’s numbers. That’s an improvement on the third week drops for Ant-Man & The Wasp Quantumania (60%), Thor: Love and Thunder (52%), and equal to that of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

As it currently stands, Brave New World is showing box office legs comparable to Multiverse of Madness, which should have it on course domestically for close to $200 million. It is currently up to $163.7 million domestically and $341.8 million worldwide against a $180 million budget and, should it continue on this trend, will end up being profitable, albeit by a close margin.

Meanwhile, The Last Breath bowed in the runner-up spot with $7.8 million. That’s a fairly decent performance for the Focus Features survival thriller, which was expected to be in the mid-single digits. The studio can thank the field of holdovers and solid buzz, both critically (77% critic aggregate at Rotten Tomatoes) and among fans (91% RT audience rating and a B+ CinemaScore).

While Last Breath is no Twisters, it was obviously never meant to be. The studio financed the film for around $23 million and is looking to get what money that can before it ultimately makes its profit on premium VOD and other home viewing outlets. It seems likely to have better legs than this year’s other mainstream thriller thus far Flight Risk and should make it to somewhere around $22 million to $23 million in the US. It has yet to release internationally and will roll out in some territories over the next few weeks.

The Monkey had a pretty decent hold, with the Osgood Perkins horror film down 55% in its second weekend to $6.4 million. That is a stronger hold than expected considering the film’s C+ CinemaScore and 59% RT audience rating, as well as the fact that horror comedy tends to be front-loaded. The good hold has put the movie toward the path to decent profit for NEON, with $24.6 million domestically and $28.6 million worldwide against an $11 million budget. It’s looking to be on track for around $35 million or so domestically at this point, more than enough for the studio to consider this a success.

Paddington In Peru had a good hold as it slipped just 31% to $4.5 million in its third week. The family adventure film is doing quite well domestically with $31.4 million and has an impressive $164.4 million worldwide against a $75 million budget, putting it well on the path to profit for Sony. It is still on course for a probable $40 million in the US.

Dog Man had the second-best hold in the top 10 as it nosed down just 28% in its fifth weekend to $4.2 million. The DreamWorks’ Animation film has now totaled $84.1 million domestically and $113.1 million worldwide, making it a hit against a $40 million budget. It should end up targeting around $95 million by the time it’s done.

Mufasa: The Lion King remains the Disney film that could, as it was up a spot to #7 in its 11th weekend. The sequel was off just 25%, the best hold in the top 10, to $1.9 million. It has now amassed $248 million stateside and $702.2 million worldwide, highly profitable against a $200 million budget. It will pass $250 million by the end of its run with ease.

Ne Zha 2 is additionally showing good legs. The Chinese-language animated adventure was down 44% in its third frame, defying the traditional heavy drops of foreign language films in the US, with $1.7 million. The film has now grossed $17.9 million stateside and $1.844 billion worldwide and is well on its path to over $20 million domestically.

Heart Eyes was down 51% in its fourth weekend to bring in $1.3 million. The rom com slasher is aiming for a small bit of profit with $28.9 million domestically and $31.2 million worldwide against an $18 million budget. It should finish off at around $32 million in the US.

Lionsgate’s The Unbreakable Boy dropped 50% from its already-low start, bringing in $1.2 million in its second weekend. That puts the film at $4.5 million total domestically with a tiny bit of international money ($9,442 to be specific). Still no word on its budget, but the film should top out at around $7 million in the US.

One Of Them Days once again closed out the top 10 with $925,000 in its seventh weekend, down 33%. The comedy has grossed $47.5 million in the US and $47.7 million worldwide against budget of $14 million. It should finish off with around $48 million.

We will have a new #1 next weekend as Mickey 17 opens, with the Bong Joon-ho-directed film expected to do in the $20 million range. Angel Studios’ Rule Breakers should open in the mid-single digits.
