Chelsea Green has explained why she dedicated her WWE SummerSlam title win to Michael Hayes, saying the moment was as much for the fans as it was for her.
During Season 2 of WWE: Unreal, Hayes had said Green’s role was to help elevate wrestlers such as Charlotte Flair and Tiffany Stratton. He did not view her as someone positioned for the main-event level at that point. At SummerSlam, Green dedicated her Interim Women’s Championship win to the veteran.
Speaking to Nikki Bella on The Nikki & Brie Show, Chelsea Green said Hayes’ comments on WWE: Unreal did not initially bother her. She only reconsidered after friends sent her messages about how the comments looked in the episode, which is why Green decided to mention Hayes during the post-SummerSlam segment (via Fightful).
“Poor Michael Hayes. He’s never going to live this down. Until the end of time. It’s going to be me in the history book with a little picture of him beside it. My number one opp: Michael Hayes. I’m not an emotional person at all. I also don’t hold grudges. In fact, I forget a lot of times; my girlfriends have to remind me, ‘You don’t like that person.’ I was so emotional that entire day. I had seen Michael Hayes and he had given me words of encouragement. On Unreal, I watched it and didn’t think anything of it. When I started getting flooded with texts, I changed my mind. ‘Oh yeah, that was kind of mean and rude.’ They’re putting you in this box when you’ve constantly fought to get out.”
She added that fans “needed that” dedication and that she wanted to give them what they expected. Green also said Hayes handled the situation well. She described him as “such a good sport” after the title dedication.
“When I went on the post-show, I was like, ‘I have to do this.’ Even though I don’t feel any type of way about it, I have to dedicate this win to him because I’m a petty queen. The fans need to that. That’s what they wanted to hear, whether I cared about it or not. They needed the moment of me saying it. Michael Hayes is such a good sport.”
