CM Punk Weighs In On Reaction To John Cena Losing His Last Match
John Cena’s final match had one of the most polarizing wrestling finishes in recent memory, and CM Punk recently shared his thoughts on the reaction to the bout. As you know, Cena tapped out to Gunther in his final match at Saturday Night’s Main Event. The online reaction proved divisive, as some took serious issue with Cena “giving up” in the bout.
Punk was part of Cena’s retirement tour, and he shared his thoughts about the match during an appearance on My Mon’s Basement With Robbie Fox. Punk, who was promoting his new film Night Patrol that hits theaters on Friday, was talking about Stranger Things’ finale. The final episode of the Netflix series has proved divisive to some in its own way, and Punk said he liked it while comparing the strong reactions to the Cena-Gunther match. You can see the highlights below:
On the Reaction to Stranger Things and Cena’s Last Match:
“I thought that was great. I was super happy about it, but people have their opinions. It’s just like the John Cena-Gunther finish. I feel like it’s the same thing. Whereas some people — maybe I don’t think you understand what you’re watching. But if you didn’t like it, I can also understand that. But to overnight make it your entire personality and spend an unhealthy amount of time talking about it?”
On the Match Itself:
“Put it this way. If John won, they’d be mad about that, too. But we wouldn’t be talking about it anymore. And we’re still talking about that finish. The smile, the tap. ‘Oh my god. The guy who said don’t give up just gave up.’ Did he? Eh. Everybody’s an expert. I thought it was beautiful.”
