Bruce Prichard has been a key figure behind WWE’s creative direction for several years. He has served as Executive Director of Creative Writing & Talent since March 2019. His future with the company has recently drawn attention following reports of a planned retirement after WrestleMania 43.

On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer provided more details about Prichard’s situation, including health concerns that could affect his ability to continue traveling regularly for WWE.

Meltzer said Prichard is dealing with a neck injury dating back to 1991, and he did not realize he had broken his neck when the original injury occurred. He had also heard the procedure described as back surgery. Regardless, he understood Bruce Prichard would undergo one or two major surgeries. (via Wrestling Inc)

“He never knew he broke his neck when it happened. This is like, 35 years later. Who was he working with… Ultimate Warrior? Probably messed up a lot of guys. I heard yesterday that it was back surgery. But either way, he’s having one or two major surgeries. And going on the road every week, it’s just going to be too difficult, makes all the sense in the world. He’s staying with the company. He’s going to be a consultant. He’s planning on working through WrestleMania and then taking the time off the road.”

He is reportedly expected to remain with WWE as a consultant and not travel regularly with the company.  Meanwhile, WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels is reportedly the expected successor to Prichard. Michaels currently heads NXT and serves as WWE Senior Vice President of Talent Development & Creative.
