Dominik Mysterio Reveals Eddie Guerrero Came Up with the 2005 Custody Battle Storyline

Dominik Mysterio has confirmed that the well-known 2005 custody battle storyline involving himself, Rey Mysterio, and Eddie Guerrero came from Eddie’s own idea. In a recent video shared on WWE’s YouTube channel, Dominik discussed the SummerSlam 2005 angle, which featured Guerrero claiming to be his biological father and a ladder match with custody papers hanging above the ring.

Dominik said Eddie was heavily involved in shaping the concept and took responsibility for ensuring the story worked for everyone. He explained that Guerrero frequently checked in on him during filming and live segments to ensure he felt safe, supported, and comfortable. He described Guerrero as kind and attentive, noting that Eddie played a major role in caring for their family during that period.

“He did so much for our family because it was his idea to do the whole custody battle… He was just always making sure that I was okay, getting taken care of, always very kind, helpful, just a bright light.”

Recalling the SummerSlam match, Dominik shared a moment when he tried to stop Eddie from climbing the ladder. He said he remembered looking up to see Eddie staring down at him, then wagging his finger in character. As an eight-year-old, Dominik remembered the moment that genuinely frightened him because of the intensity Eddie displayed during the match.

“I look up and there’s Eddie standing over me, just waving his finger. Fear is the only thing in my mind, and just because of his intensity, man. Now seeing it as a wrestler and being a performer in it, I’m like, ‘man, he was so good.'”

Rey Mysterio won the match after Eddie’s real-life wife, Vickie, interfered and held him back. After 20 years, the custody battle angle has remained a prominent part of WWE history, and Dominik’s comments offer insight into how Eddie Guerrero shaped the narrative behind the scenes.
