Jim Ross Defends Jeff Jarrett Over His 1999 WWE Pay Dispute

On a recent episode of his podcast, “Grilling JR,” Jim Ross pushed back on the long-running narrative that Jeff Jarrett held Vince McMahon up for money before dropping the WWE Intercontinental Championship title to Chyna, revealing that he personally spoke to Vince about Jarrett’s pay. As Jarrett recounted recently, his contract was expiring at No Mercy 1999, and he requested to be paid before doing the match. You can check out his comments below:
On the Situation:
“That’s such bullshit. You’d have that mindset if you had been screwed by this company, WWE, on more than one occasion — you might have that mindset. But there’s no reason to think he wasn’t going to get his money. Jeff didn’t book himself against Chyna. The office did.”
On the Meeting:
“’I sat down and talked to the old man about your money’ — Jeff was already above me in that regard, which I say tongue-in-cheek. But Vince McMahon was never going to screw Jeff Jarrett out of a dime. Anybody who thinks he was is really wrong, in my opinion. I’ve had my ups and downs with Vince, same as a lot of other guys. I saw a thing online the other day that said JR’s been fired 10 times by WWE. I don’t think it’s been quite 10 times, but I’ve been fired more than once. You can’t wear it, you can’t live with it — just move on.”
