Jim Ross Weighs In On Corey Graves Saying Current Wrestlers Don’t Talk With Commentary

Jim Ross addressed recent comments from Corey Graves about wrestlers failing to lay out their match story for the announce team on the newest episode of Grilling JR. Graves, who is part of the commentary teams on Raw and for AAA, made the comments in an interview while promotion AAA Triplemania 34.

Ross explained what he wanted from talent during his own years at the desk and spoke about why Graves’ comments are “troubling” to him. You can check out his comments below:

On What He Wanted To Know Before a Match:

“Yeah, I did. Of course I did. I didn’t want to know the finish — all the imagination’s in the finish. I wanted to know the theme. Your theme, and your opponent’s theme, your collective theme of this match. Are you going to try to debilitate an arm or an ankle or whatever? What are you going to do to get your heat? And of course the babyface’s part was easy — just don’t die and sell like a drunk man and you’ll be all right.”

On Triple H Being One of the Best At It:

“Triple H was excellent at that. He would lay out the feeling he wanted to create in that performance. But not everybody that’s on TV comes by the announce position and spends two or three minutes, because that’s all it takes. You don’t have to go over everything hold for hold and spend 20 or 30 minutes doing it. At least I don’t. ‘You lost me, pal.’ I think I’m decent enough and have a decent enough understanding that all I want to make sure is that I know your basic storyline, so I know where to go or where not to go.”

On Why Graves’ Comments Concern Him:

“So it’s not a hard thing, but it’s a matter of guys just giving a s**t. That’s troubling. What Corey said is troubling to an old school guy like me, because you don’t want any more of the fundamentals that we’ve seen in wrestling over the years to continue to be a little bit — I don’t want to say vanishing, but getting a little pale. Getting a little pale.”
