Leighty’s Retro Rankings: 1994 WCW and WWF PPV Matches

-Book Plug: If you enjoy these Retro Review and Countdowns, my review of every 1996 show is now available on Amazon in Kindle and Paperback form. If you have purchased a copy, it is greatly appreciated and if you could leave an honest review on Amazon that would be helpful.
-We had a brief delay in fishing 1994 thanks to the library leaving Peacock, but between Netflix, YouTube, and other sources we got the job done. As always, I like to look back at the year I just reviewed and rank every single PPV match. 1994 was a big year as the WWE finally embraced a post Hulk Hogan era and WCW countered by bringing Hulk Hogan into the company. It was the first signs of WCW becoming a threat to the WWF. The previous year was dominated by monster heel champions and here it was all about babyface runs between Hulk Hogan and Bret Hart. This was a year in which both sides were setting up for the bigger battles down the line and you would see multiple people changing sides. Before getting to 95, we take a look back at 94 one last time.
-As noted in the past with this column, this is only WCW/WWF PPV Matches. I don’t include Clash of the Champions as it doesn’t seem fair to compare them to PPV Matches. Shout-out to the Dustin Rhodes/Vader war at the November Clash though. I will do a ranking of every Clash match once I go back and review the first four that are missing from my review library.
-Finally, these are obviously my rankings and I know we all have our favorite wrestlers and style, etc. There is always room for healthy debate and discussion, but at the end of the day this is just my opinion. Different takes are cool, but just be respectful to anyone with a different opinion. As the great Larry Csonka would say, “have a take, don’t be a dick.”

3) WWF Championship: Steel Cage: Bret Hart (c) vs. Owen Hart ***** (WWF SummerSlam)
Owen attacks as Bret comes through the door and beats him down in the corner. To the next corner and Owen pounds away with right hands from a mounted position. Bret gets a reverse atomic drop and hits a clothesline to slow down the Owen onslaught. Owen goes to the eyes and back to throwing punches. Vince notes this is escape rules. Bret blocks being sent into the cage and hits a DDT. They slug it out and Bret wins this exchange. He starts to climb, but Owen cuts him off. Vince notes that Bret is suffering from strep throat coming into this match. Owen hits the enziguiri and starts to climb, but Bret pulls him down to the top rope and brings him back into the ring with a belly-to-back suplex. Bret tries to go out the door, but Owen pulls him back in by the leg. Whip to the corner and the cage make a great sound just by the ring shaking. Bret with a bulldog out of the corner and they fight to get out the door and we get some great teases that freaks out the crowd. Both men diving for the door, but getting caught is sweet. Bret rips at Owen’s mouth to slow down his crawl and pulls him back into the ring. Bret tries to climb, but Owen grabs him by the leg and slams him back to the mat. I like that both men are going for the win any chance they can. Owen starts to climb and gets over the top of the cage, but Bret grabs him by the hair and pulls him back inside the cage. They start trading right hands on the top rope and Bret loses this exchange as he falls to the mat. Owen comes off with a shotgun missile dropkick and kips up before trying to sprint up the cage. Bret makes the save again and tries to climb over his brother to escape. Bret kicks at Owen, but gets yanked down and BOUNCES BALLS FIRST off the top rope. Anvil is laughing as he celebrates in the crowd. Owen starts to crawl for the door and the crowd is really freaking out but Bret makes the save. Bret drops a head-butt to the abdomen as we see Bulldog cheering on Bret in the crowd. Bret comes off the second rope, but misses an elbow. Owen climbs and again, I can’t praise this crowd enough with the way they are buying every escape attempt. Owen is over the cage again, but Bret has him by the and we get the visual of Owen dangling from the cage. Bret gets him back into the ring and goes for his own escape, but Owen stops that and Bret gets crotched on the top of the cage. Suplex bring Bret back to the mat as we near 16:00 and it is flying by. Owen climbs, but he gets stopped and is the first one to be run into the cage. This is 1994 WWF, so there will be no blood. Bret over the cage and the crowd explodes as they think he is about to win, but Owen brings him back by the hair and then hits his own belly-to-back suplex. Owen is still in the best shape and drills Bret with a piledriver! Owen gingerly climbs as both men are selling the affects of this match. Bret meets him up there and again they start trading right hands. Owen knocks Bret down, but he’s too tired and falls off the ropes as well. Bret crawls to the door and is nearly out, but Owen pulls him back in. Bret goes crazy with punches and lunges out the door again, but gets stopped. Now Owen gets to go crazy with right hands and nearly gets himself out of the door. Bret with a slingshot that sends Owen into the cage to a big pop. We have people in the front row giving them a standing ovation. Bret crawls to the wrong corner to sell the exhaustion and when he gets to the door, Owen is there to cut him off. Nice! Hard whip to the corner by Owen. Bret goes for a slam, but Owen slips out and gets a go behind. Bret runs towards the cage and Owen goes face first, but Bret hits his knee as well. Bret climbs with one good leg and hobbles over the top of the cage. Owen scrambles to stop Bret and forces Bret upside down as he pulls him back into the ring. Spin Wheel Kick from Owen and he slowly climbs. Bret gets up to stop him and pulls Owen back into the ring by the hair. Owen gets the better of this exchange with right hands. The crowd starts a “Lets Go Bret,” chant and he responds by kicking Owen off the cage. We get another double down spot as they crack heads. They take their time in selling the damage before Owen makes the first move to climb. Bret meets him up there and brings Owen back into the ring with a superplex. Awesome! Not as visually impressive as Hogan/Boss Man, but still awesome! Bret actually has Owen covered and this would be over if we had a ref involved. Bret crawls towards the door as the drama increases. Owen grabs Bret by the boot and drags him back into the ring. Owen with a sharpshooter which ticks off the crowd. Bret powers his way out and reverses the hold. Bret releases and starts to climb as he feels Owen is done. Bret is all the way over, but Owen lunges and grabs him by the hair. Both men battle and then both fall back to the mat from the top rope. The race is on again and both men end up over the top of the cage. They battle on the outside of the cage and it’s a race to the bottom. Owen gets rammed into the cage and falls backwards, but his legs get caught. That lets Bret drop down for the win at 32:22.
Winner and Still WWF Champion: Bret Hart via escape at 32:22
-Amazing match with a ton of drama and I loved that they both just kept going for the win whenever possible. They weren’t in there to just destroy the other. That was something Bruno would do as he would beat his challenger until they couldn’t move and then walk out of the cage satisfied. For Hogan it was about keeping others out and getting revenge to blow off a feud. He would then climb out the cage. This was different as they knew the rules and were looking for any way to get out and win as soon as possible. I shortchanged this match a bit on my initial review nearly 20 years ago. This match has aged fantastically and tells a great story. It went over 30 minutes but flew by and they had the crowd with them the entire time.
2) WWF Intercontinental Championship: Ladder Match: Razor Ramon (c) vs. Shawn Michaels ***** (WWF WrestleMania X)
-Shawn was IC Champ and failed a drug test (which he denies). He was pissed and wouldn’t send the IC Title back. A new belt was made and Razor beats Rick Martel to win the vacated Championship. Shawn is back with his copy of the belt and they decide to hang both above the ring and give us the ladder match for the first time on a big stage. Vince explains the winner is the first to retrieve the belt and that the ladder can used as a weapon. Shawn gets a leg trip and tries a hiptoss, but Razor blocks. Shawn goes to the eyes and flips over, but Razor hits him with a clean choke slam. Shawn ducks a right hand and gets a reverse neckbreaker. Shoulder tackle from Razor, but he tries a second one and Shawn side steps and sends him to the floor. Diesel stalks his future best friend and OUTSIDERS EXPLODE as he runs him down with a clothesline. The ref didn’t see anything as pointed out by Diesel, but it’s Hebnar and he is drunk on power and sends Diesel to the back. The delay did wonders for Razor as he lands a right hand and Shawn starts BUMPING all over the place. Clothesline sends him to the floor and Shawn flips once he hits out there for good measure. Razor exposes the concrete on the floor, but Shawn stops that and sends the match back into the ring. Razor ends up screwing himself as he goes for The Razor’s Edge, but Shawn backdrops out and Razor hits the exposed concrete. That’s a nice little spot there. With Razor out, Shawn heads up the aisle and gets his hands on the ladder first. Razor greets him with a right hand and goes for the ladder. We get the cool spot where Shawn baseball slides the ladder into Razor’s gut and the reaction is awesome. Razor’s head gets bounced off the steps and Shawn goes back to the ladder. He brings it into the ring and another gut shot to Razor. Shawn rams the ladder into’s Razor’s stomach again and then just throws it down across his back. Cool! Another shot as he just tosses it across the ring and hits Razor in the back. That had to suck! Shawn starts to climb as the crowd freaks out. Razor stops Shawn and pulls his pants down, so we have a full moon in MSG. The man did idolize Ric Flair! Shawn shakes it off and drops an elbow from the ladder and then covers his ass. In an iconic moment, Shawn comes off the top of the ladder with a splash. They played that highlight in video packages for years. Shawn makes the climb again, but Razor tips the ladder over and Shawn BOUNCES like a super ball off the top rope. The reaction from the crowd to each bump is something else. Both men end up colliding as they crack heads and both are out. We get the above ring camera to see the belts swinging back and forth while both men are laying on the mat. Shawn is the first to move and sets the ladder up in the corner. Vince is worried Shawn is going to use the ladder as “an offensive weapon.” Razor reverses the whip to the corner and Shawn takes a bump off the ladder and over the ropes to the floor. Razor follows with ladder in hand and runs it into Shawn’s back. Catapult into the ladder and Shawn makes sure to stick on the ladder and fall backwards with it. The man is dedicated! Back in the ring, Razor swings the ladder like an uppercut and Shawn goes flying over the top rope. Razor looks to climb, but Shawn dives off the top to stop that attempt. In a cool unplanned touch, the ladder falls over and lands on Shawn. They climb at the same time on different sides and the crowd is loving all the drama and suspense in this one. Razor SLAMS SHAWN OFF THE LADDER, but the ladder buckles and Razor spills to the canvas as well. They have both stated that was the only ladder they had and if it broke they were kind of screwed. Razor climbs as the ladder is clearly bent, but Shawn with a dropkick to cut that run off. Shawn just casually tips the ladder over and it lands on Razor. Superkick from Shawn, but it wasn’t over as a finisher for him yet, so the reaction is subdued. Shawn teases a Razor’s Edge, but just hits a sweet piledriver! Another famous spot as Shawn climbs to the top rope and rides the ladder down onto Razor. That gets a big round of applause from people in the first few rows. Shawn puts the ladder over Razor and makes another climb to the top. He gets his fingers on the title, but Razor is up and shoulders the ladder. Shawn falls off and lands balls first on the top rope and gets his foot caught in the ropes. That’s a rather genius finish as the race is on between Razor climbing and Shawn freeing himself. Razor wins the race and retrieves the two belts at 18:48.
Winner and Still Intercontinental Champion: Razor Ramon via belt retrieval at 18:48
-Revolutionary match filled with drama and a crowd that is freaking out over what they are seeing. Yes, what they did is tame compared to what we see in ladder matches now, but this is still a flawless classic. I loved how they tied everything together and things just flowed so well. The ending of a desperate Shawn being trapped in the ropes was fantastic as it gave Razor a chance to sell the beating in his climb, but not make Shawn looking dumb for just laying there.
1) WCW World Tag Team Titles: Broadstreet Bully Match: The Nasty Boys (c) vs. Cactus Jack and Kevin Sullivan ***** (WCW Slamboree)
-Buffer mentioning The Flyers won the Cup nearly 20 years ago makes me laugh as they are still waiting. 39 years and counting! Have you seen The Flyers win The Cup? Sidney Crobsy owns you! Sorry, sorry. Dave Schultz is your special referee. Cactus had been teaming with Maxx Payne and they had a wild brawl at Spring Stampede with The Nasty Boys. Payne got injured, so Sullivan is taking his place as The Nasty Boys put his brother, Dave on the shelf. I have seen this match a ton as I owned this PPV on VHS when I found it at our local National Record Mart (yes, I am old). Spoiler: This is one of my favorite matches of all time, so you can pretty much guess the rating. Let’s Go! Sullivan is wearing a Phillies version to suck up and I can’t talk crap on them as I am a Pirates fan. We do have Skenes though! The name of the match is just a different way of saying Street Fight. THE BRAWL IS ON! All four men go at once and it’s chaos to start. Sags and Cactus immediately beat on each other with chairs and fight through the crowd. Sullivan uses a crutch on Knobbs, who then grabs a chair and decks Sullivan in the head. Sags and Cactus start to fight towards the back while Sullivan and Knobbs get in the ring. A fire extinguisher gets dropped on Cactus’ back. Sullivan hits a piledriver on the ramp. Jack back with a trashcan to the head of Sags. Running trashcan shot to Sags as the Philly crowd is loving every second of this. All four men brawl on the ramp as Jesse and Tony are just in awe of the carnage. Cactus comes off the middle rope with an elbow to the floor, but Knobbs moves and Cactus flattens the trashcan. Knobbs wildly swings it and bounces it off Cactus’ head. Just sick, unprotected head shots with whatever they can find. Some fans camera gets broken over Cactus. Knobbs gets the remains of the can thrown at his face. Chair shot to Cactus! Sullivan picks up the chair and fires it at Knobbs’ face. Sags goes crazy with the flattened can as Tony calls this the damndest thing he has ever seen. Cactus with a clothesline on Knobbs to send him back in the ring as the crowd erupts. Sags and Cactus fight up the ramp and Cactus gets tossed off the ramp and through a table. Hey why not use a light stand? Sags abuses Cactus with that, but gets tripped. CACTUS SUPLEXES THE TABLE ON SAGS! Chair shot from Sullivan to Knobbs. Sags picks up a piece of the table and breaks it over Cactus’ head. Sullivan and Knobbs head to the entrance to join the other two. A trash can lid gets put to good use by Sags. Somewhere a fire extinguisher gets set off by Cactus, who is tucked under the stage. Sags is choking on the smoke from the extinguisher. Cactus and Sags head back towards the ring as we still haven’t anyone go for a pin, which is cool touch. Knobbs with a lid shot to Sullivan. Cactus is bleeding all over the place as Sags comes off the top with his elbow. Instead of going for the cover, he pushes Schultz and goes for his hockey stick. Schultz stops that and the crowd erupts as they get into a fight. Schultz wins the hockey fight and Cactus decks Sags with the hockey stick for the pin at 9:38.
Winner and New WCW World Tag Team Champions: Cactus Jack and Kevin Sullivan via pin at 9:38
-I love this match so much! Just total chaos from the opening bell and it didn’t need to be a 20 minute drawn out brawl. There was only one pin attempt and it was the one that ended the match. It also gave Payne and Dave a chance to get their revenge while blowing off the feud for good. I didn’t know of ECW and this was basically my introduction as Jack and Sullivan were masters of that style and you could see the influence. Jesse and Tony only added to it, and I think Jesse on commentary worked better than Heenan as I think Bobby would have been trying to cut too many jokes. Obviously this may seem tame 30 years later to people who have watched what has been done in recent years, but for me this match still holds up as an all time classic.
-We are don’t yet! Sags attacks Jack after the match and beats on him with the stick. That brings out Maxx Payne for his revenge and he hits THE GREATEST GUITAR SHOT OF ALL TIME on Saggs to bring the house down. That was beautiful! Knobbs is still up and starts to retreat. Dave Sullivan hobbles down and gets his revenge by breaking a crutch over Knobbs chest. The Champs, the ref, and their friends all celebrate on the ramp as the crowd goes crazy.
-I totally understand anyone questioning my top choice, but that chaotic brawl is one of my 10 favorite matches of all time. I was lucky enough to get a VHS copy of the show from our local record store (yep, old) and watches it so many times. No matter how many times I see it, I watch in marvel. Every 20 minute standard tag Nasty Boy match I review makes me love that match even more. I know how great Razor/Shawn and the two Owen/Bret matches are, and if they are at the top of your list, fantastic!
-It also says something about how great Owen and Bret are to have two different matches and both be top tier stuff. I like the cage match more because watching it, you believed Owen had a chance to win. I never got that feeling in the first match and probably why him winning was such a shock.
-Razor/Shawn is one of the most influential matches of all time and deserves all the praise it receives. The fact that matched/topped the match sixteen or so months later is crazy. Shawn and Bret pop up a lot of these lists which shouldn’t shock anyone. For me Foley has his second Match of the Year as he took home 96 honors with Shawn.
-Also interesting is the Nasty Boys were involved in 3 of my Top 10 PPV matches of the year. 1994 was a good year for them as someone finally figured out what they do best.
-Other noteworthy appearances by Vader as he continues his run of great matches during his run in WCW. The Hogan/Flair series is better than people think and should be watched again. Finally, props to Owen and Kid for delivering the greatest 4 minute match of all time.
-That is my list for 1994 and up next we start the journey through 1995. When we get through 95, I will have a decision to make, as 96 (my book is for sale on Amazon) and 97 are done. Do I jump to 1988 or do I go back to the start with the first Starrcade? I will take any feedback.
-As always, thanks for reading!
