Leighty’s WWE Main Event Review 8.27.26

-Last week things went wonky as our three-match show turned into just one match and the shortest episode of Main Event all time. Tonight we get the other two matches as I assume nothing was taped since RAW and SmackDown were together this past Monday.

Wendy Choo vs. Maxxine Dupri (w/ Austin Theory)
-Wendy used to be part of Level Up and is a former WWE Evolve Women’s Champion. She ditched the sleepy psycho mute gimmick and I have enjoyed the new Wendy Choo. It’s been a bit since we’ve seen Maxxine on Main Event. This is her first appearance on the show since joining with Theory. Lockup and Maxxine gets an arm drag and then a shoulder tackle. The crowd boos and some yells out “Maxxine sucks.” She is doing her job then. Maxxine with a side headlock, but Wendy powers her way and gets a roll-up for two. She gets a series of knock downs and hits a basement dropkick. Maxxine rolls to the floor and Theory wants a time-out. Wendy makes the mistake of chasing and Theory stands in front of her. That gives Maxxine a chance to get back on her feet in the ring and catch Wendy with a running knee. Maxxine with some good aggression as she stomps away in the corner. Fisherman’s Suplex gets two! Vic: “She wasn’t quite perfect enough.” Good call! Maxxine chokes on the ropes and lands a slap to the face. Theory picks her up and the crowd boos as they make goo-goo eyes at each other. Maxxine starts using some of Theory’s offense which is cool to see. Choo with a flash roll-up for two, but Maxxine boots her down and gets a two count. Maxxine with a reverse chinlock and she slams Wendy on her face to release. Maxxine misses a step-up leg drop and Wendy starts her comeback. Running clothesline and another one. Hammerlock clothesline! The crowd is getting into Wendy. Handspring forearm in the corner. Running boot followed by a reverse neckbreaker for two. Wendy is getting a lot here. Dirt Nap, but Maxxine squats down to escape and they trade roll-ups. Theory on the apron to distract and Maxxine hits Maxxed Out for the pin at 5:38.
Winner: Maxxine Dupri via pin at 5:38
-Fun little match with Wendy getting to show something. Again, I have become a fan since she dropped the old gimmick. Maxxine continues to get better and she seemed more confident with this heel character. **1/2

Akira Tozawa vs. Jasper Troy
-Jasper Troy won Season One of WWE LFG. He has been on NXT since and is a former Speed Champion. The story should be easy here as Troy is a MONSTER and Tozawa is all speed and stamina. Tozawa jumps on Troy’s back, but gets shrugged off. He circles the ring and tries another go behind. Troy keeps shoving him away. Troy misses a clothesline and Tozawa starts firing away with leg kicks. He tries a whip but no chance. Tozawa gets sent to the corner, but gets up both feet to block. Tozawa jumps off the ropes, but Troy can’t catch him the way they had planned and it looks kind of awkward. Tozawa runs at Troy and gets dropped. The crowd starts chanting for Tozawa. Troy chokes on the ropes and runs Tozawa from one corner into the other. Tozawa with a chop and it does nothing. Troy with a hard whip to the corner and Tozawa is doing a great job of selling and bumping all over the ring. Tozawa tries to come off the top, but gets caught and Troy transitions into a delayed vertical suplex. He holds Tozawa for over 20 seconds before completing the suplex. Nice! Alley-oop flapjack followed by a standing splash and another one and here’s a third one. Tozawa is out at two though and the crowd is into this one as this story of big vs. little always works. Troy picks Tozawa up by one hand and throws him into the corner. Tozawa gets caught again and Troy with a bear hug. Tozawa with rapid fire elbows to break Troy down to a knee. Troy catches him again but Tozawa gets a DDT. TOZAWA-MANIA as he tears his shirt! Rapid fire kicks followed by a superkick. Troy goozles him, but Tozawa counters with a rana for the pin at 5:57 to a decent pop.
Winner: Akira Tozawa via pin at 5:57
-Started a little rough but they turned it around and got the crowd into the match. The fans love Tozawa and him fighting from underneath against a monster is a money way to get the crowd into the match. Wrestling can be simple at times and things like this always works. **1/2
