Mercedes Mone Reflects On 2023 Injury: ‘Worst Injury Of My Career’

Mercedes Mone recently shared some thoughts on her 2023 foot injury, noting that it changed her forever. The now-AEW star suffered a serious injury during her NJPW STRONG Women’s Championship match with Willow Nightingale at NJPW Resurgence in May of 2023. The injury happened when Mone fell from the top rope during the match and kept her out of the ring for a full year.
Mone reflected on the injury in her latest Mone Mag. Mone is auctioning off several pieces of her ring gear, and among them are the shoes she wore at the event. She called the injury the worst of her career; you can see the exceprt below:
“Shoes I Wore for NJPW PPV Resurgence
My main event against Willow Nightingale for the NJPW Strong Women’s Title changed me forever.
That day was tragic. The worst injury of my career. The pain was like nothing I’d ever felt—but I knew I had to finish the match. I couldn’t let the promoters or fans down, but I also didn’t want to let Willow down.
That match kicked off a beautiful women’s lineage in New Japan Pro-Wrestling, and I’m so proud to be part of its foundation. Sometimes the hardest moments create the strongest futures.”
Mone is currently in hiatus from AEW but is making a number of independent appearances as she takes time off of TV.
