Note On Plans For Johnny Gargano After Undisputed Title Match On WWE Smackdown

Johnny Gargano finally got up to get an title match on last week’s WWE Smackdown, and a new report has a bit of an update on plans for him from here. As noted, Gargano stood up after months of laying down depressed backstage in Smackdown vignettes and challenged CM Punk for the WWE Undisputed Championship on last week’s show. While he didn’t get the win, he got a hefty pop from his hometown crowd.
In response to a fan question in the latest Fightful Select Answers Q&A, Sean Ross Sapp noted that the plan is for Gargano to be featured more going forward. He noted that sources in the company indicated that when they started the angle back in January, there was no real endgame planned out and no end in sight at the time.
The news isn’t particularly shocking since Gargano alluded to as much after the match, posting to social media to say (among other things):
“No more laying down. Last night was the beginning.. not the end. It’s time to stand up, be myself and put in the work to become the man I was always meant to be.”
