Red Velvet Looks Back at Match With Shaquille O’Neal, His Advice To Her

Red Velvet was put on the map in AEW through her mixed tag team match with Cody Rhodes against Shaquille O’Neil and Jade Cargill, and she recently looked back at the bout. Velvet and Rhodes on the March 3rd, 2021 episode of Dynamite. Shaq and Cargill picked up the win.

Velvet talked a bit about the match during her appearance on AEW Close Up with Renee Paquette. She talked about how the match got her signed to the company and the… interesting advice Shaq gave her. You can see the highlights below:

On the Match:

“Oh my god. I’m so mad I didn’t touch him. Like we couldn’t — it was a mixed tag, so we didn’t get to touch. He was so sweet to me. I laughed too, because he was like, ‘Just make sure–‘ He whispered in my ear a couple days before and he’s like, ‘When Jade picks you up, the way you you defeat her, just fart in her face. You got this.’ And I was just like, ‘Okay, great.’

“It was great. That match changed my life. And I’m always grateful of, I say like being oblivious. So new to the business though, right? So I don’t think I saw the writing on the wall of what that match was going to turn into. I was transitioning from being an extra. That match was what got me a full salary contract, full-time at AEW. But it changed my life and I was happy I was just — I wouldn’t say happy to be there that day. I was just so happy to be wrestling on TV. And it was a big moment, but I don’t think I knew how big it was, and I think that’s why I was able to capitalize. I just went and did it.”

On Looking Back At the Match:

“In hindsight if it was now, I think the nerves like, oh my god. It was such a big match, ESPN, all this stuff. I was so like — I was just like, ‘Oh, I’m an extra. I hope I get a job here. This is going to be great.’ I was booked and busy after that. Action figure came out, it was just great. Big turning point.”
