Backstage Note on Canceled Match Originally Planned for AEW WrestleDream 2025

One match that was initially planned for AEW WrestleDream 2025 was reportedly canceled due to injuries and scheduling conflicts, according to a new report from Wrestling Observer Radio. The pay-per-view, held in St. Louis, Missouri, still delivered key storylines and headline bouts, but a few high-profile plans had to be scrapped at the last moment.
The cancellation involved the much-anticipated Golden Lovers reunion, which would have seen Kenny Omega and Kota Ibushi team up to face Mark Davis and Josh Alexander. On a recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Radio (via Wrestling Inc.), Dave Meltzer reported that the match was dropped from the final card after Ibushi sustained an injury before the event. His earlier speculation incorrectly suggested that Hechicero would partner with Alexander. However, Meltzer corrected it, saying that Hechicero was never part of the plan.
“So the deal with the match, it was originally going to be Kenny Omega and Kota Ibushi against Mark Davis and Josh Alexander. That was originally going to be the match on this show that ended up not happening because of Kota Ibushi’s injury. I had written in the Observer that it was Hechicero (and Alexander) but Hechicero was booked in Wolverhampton, England this weekend…So Hechicero was never booked on this show.”
Meanwhile, Hechicero went on to score back-to-back victories in the UK, at CMLL and Rev Pro’s Fantastica Mania UK event in Wolverhampton, England, confirming his prior commitments during WrestleDream weekend.
Despite the lineup change, Kenny Omega, Mark Davis, and Josh Alexander still appeared at AEW WrestleDream 2025. In one of the show’s major moments, The Don Callis Family attacked Jurassic Express (Luchasaurus and Jack Perry) after their victory over The Young Bucks in the $500,000 tag team match. Omega made a surprise run-in to help the duo, while Matt and Nick Jackson refused to intervene, further intensifying tensions within The Elite storyline.
Expenses are not looking good for the @YoungBucks, they NEED to pick up the win against Jurassic Express to add $500K to their purse!
