The Sandman Loses Retirement Match to the Invisible Man

Every ECW fan remembers when WWE tried to relaunch the brand on Syfy, adding supposed science fiction inspired characters like The Zombie to get caned by Sandman. That wasn’t exactly considered one of wrestling’s finest moments.

However, in his retirement match at Joey Janela’s Spring Break X event in Las Vegas yesterday, the Sandman fought another science fiction character, with far more crowd pleasing results. His opponent this time? The Invisible Man. (via Figure Four Online.)

Lest it look like only one (visible) person in the ring, there were numerous run-ins, from Mick Foley, Missy Hyatt, Vampiro, some zombies, and even the Invisible Man’s equally invisible brother.

For the finish, Invisible Man and Invisible Stan hit Sandman and Foley with a couple of low blows before the former pinned Sandman.

By putting over the Invisible Man, Sandman has undoubtedly helped him secure his place as a potent opponent for any and all future matches. That is, if anyone but the Sandman actually has the guts to face him now. He is clearly a vicious cheater.

Sandman is a former five-time ECW World Heavyweight Champion. He began his career with a surfer gimmick as “Mr. Sandman,” but found success after channeling his real personality to become a smoking, drinking hardcore wrestler, usually seen with a Singapore cane. During his lengthy ring entrances, fans would sing along to most of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman,” which was replaced by more generic music during his WCW and WWE stints.
