Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson says that he wasn’t too scuffed by the negative critic reaction to Moana, said that’s just how it goes sometimes. The live-action remake of the 2016 animated film did not score well with critics, scoring a low 31% critic aggregate on Rotten Tomatoes. The original film had a 96% score with critics.
Johnson was asked in an interview with PEOPLE about the negative reaction to the film. He noted that he was originally hyped when the first couple reviews came in well, but when the remainder skewed negative he took it in stride.
“Our first two reviews came out,” Johnson told the site. “I’ll never forget it … They were amazing. I was like, ‘Wow.’ [Then] it went another way, as sometimes happens. That’s just the way it goes because we’re in this business. [My wife and I] had a lot of these conversations at home, at the kitchen island late at night when the babies are asleep. The challenge was, ‘OK, let’s remember, though, what’s going to be beyond this opening weekend. Let’s remember what’s happening right now and the noise that’s happening right now.’”
He then said that he’s happy that some people like it, noting, “If you love it, great. If you don’t, no problem.” The film has scored better with moviegoers, with an 8*% RT audience rating and an A- CinemaScore.
Moana is a money loser for Disney, with just $118.6 million domestically and $265.3 million worldwide against a $250 million budget. It will likely lose Disney over $100 million.
