UWF Power Pro Wrestling (1.17.1987) Review

-Filling in another gap thanks to Fish & Chips.

-Originally aired January 17, 1987.

-Your host is Jim Ross.

GARY YOUNG vs. JACK VICTORY

-A rematch from a time limit draw a few weeks earlier. JR drops a hint about why we’re getting a rematch and it seems to be part of Bill Watts’ mission to make wrestling “real.” As JR points out, you see main event guys go to non-finishes all the time, and it always leads to a rematch. Here in the UWF, these guys are middle-to-bottom of the ladder, and if they didn’t get a satisfactory outcome, why wouldn’t they ask for a rematch? JR says they both demanded it, so here we are.

-Victory complains about phantom tights-pulling and stalls enough for me to suspect we’re getting another draw. Young applies a side headlock. Victory uses the hair to break free, but Young recovers and rolls him up for two, leading to more gripes about tights-pulling.

-Mike George ambles down to ringside as Victory throws Young through the ropes and onto the timekeeper’s table. Young hangs in there and throws a series of dropkicks, and a bodypress gets two. George goes for the kill and pulls the top rope down and Young…kind of needs a little help…so George yanks him by the hair and pulls with all his might to make him fall over the top rope. George throws him back into the ring and Victory picks up the tainted win with a facebuster. I’ll wager Young demands some sort of tag team partner for some future house shows. Match was fine.

-The Dallas Times Herald will have free posters of Dark Journey and Missy Hyatt in the next few weeks!

ELI THE ELIMINATOR vs. JEFF RAITZ

-Eli’s getting a makeover, wrestling in jeans now.

-Eli whips Raitz and gives him some boots. Suplex gets two. Tombstone by Eli and Raitz takes a vicious bump, with his head bouncing straight off the canvas on impact. Eli gets the win, but referee Carl Fergie seems to be legit checking on Raitz as we go to commercial. If he’s actually okay, then that was a damn good bump.

-JR talks to Dr. Death and Chavo Guerrero, who are teaming up to face the Freebirds later. Dr. Death promises to “open up a can of Kick I Can’t Say That on TV” on the Freebirds. Oh yeah, this guy was going to draw $5 million against Steve Austin.

-Last week on UWF, Ted DiBiase demanded a match against the One Man Gang. Gang heads straight to the ring and busts DiBiase wide open, leading Michael Hayes, on commentary, to say that DiBiase would probably be better off in “a minimum wrestling organization.” WELP!

-Gang misses a splash and DiBiase gets a quick pin, proving that he can pin the One Man Gang. Now he just has to do it in a title match.

ONE MAN GANG (Heavyweight Champion, with Skandar Akbar) vs. JEFF GAYLORD

-Gang hammers Gaylord and backs him into the corner for a series of mini-splashes, and the audio quality is so good on this episode that you can hear a little squeak from the turnbuckle on impact every time. 747 splash finishes with ease.

-Last week, Terry Gordy beat the crap out of the Fantastics until Steve Williams came to the rescue.

“Dr. Death” STEVE WILLIAMS & CHAVO GUERRERO vs. TERRY GORDY & ANGEL OF DEATH (with Sunshine)
-Sunshine trips and nearly eats shit as she walks up the steps into the ring, and the skillful post production crew makes sure that absolutely every frame of it stays in the final cut. So this is supposed to be Gordy and Buddy Roberts, but for vague reasons, Buddy’s not in the building, so Angel of Death gets the slot.

-Doc and Gordy hate each other so much that their partners give up trying to hold them back during the introduction. Doc handily wins the opening brawl. Terry seems to have aggravated a knee injury and stalls a bit before heading back in. Chavo and Williams are all over the leg with kicks and headbutts.

-Angel tags in and manages to shrug off some dropkicks from Chavo. Chavo escapes before he gets into too much trouble, and Doc works the arm on Angel while JR is all “Football, football, football, football” on commentary.

-Back from commercial, Chavo is suddenly in trouble with Gordy dominating him. A neckbreaker by Gordy. Angel tags in and applies a bearhug, and we get a weird moment where the crowd seems to not-understand a spot. Chavo breaks the hold by finding a way to turn it into a DDT, which looked neat and got ZERO reaction for some reason. Gordy tags in to block the hot tag, and the heels keep dismantling Chavo. Gordy goes in for the kill with a piledriver, but Chavo makes it a backdrop. We do the spot where the referee misses the tag, and while Doc argues, the heels throw Chavo over the top rope and Hayes rams him into the post.

-Doc has had enough of this shit and just comes in anyway. Gordy tries to piledrive him and it goes badly for Gordy again. Angel tries holding Doc in place for a chair shot, but Doc ducks, Angel gets hit, and Doc cleans house with the chair. Decent formula tag team action.
