Backstage Note on Why AEW Dark Is Returning for One Night Only

AEW temporarily revived its Dark YouTube series for a one-night-only Holiday Stocking Stuffer episode taped in Cardiff, Wales. According to PWInsider, the special was produced as a local-exclusive experience for fans in attendance while also giving additional roster members televised ring time. AEW Dark, which previously ran as a weekly digital series, has not been reinstated on a regular basis.
Mike Johnson confirmed the idea came directly from AEW President Tony Khan. The goal was to offer Cardiff fans something “unique and special” from the standard Dynamite or Collision shows. The taping also allowed the company to feature more talent from the roster.
The special episode was recorded over the weekend and will premiere on AEW’s official YouTube channel at 7 PM Eastern on December 16. The match lineup has The Death Riders facing The Grizzled Young Veterans, with Nathan Cruz, in a trios match. Orange Cassidy teams up with Roderick Strong and Mascara Dorada against Mark Andrews, Kid Lykos, and Kid Lykos 2. The card also includes a singles match between Isla Dawn and Marina Shafir.
AEW Dark originally ended regular production as the company adjusted its content strategy to focus on Dynamite, Collision, and Ring of Honor programming. This Cardiff taping does not change that structure. At this time, there is no indication that AEW plans to resume Dark as a recurring series.
