HBO’s Confederate series already had a foot in the grave before David Benioff and D.B. Weiss moved to Netflix, and now it’s totally dead. Vulture editor Joe Adalian has confirmed with sources close to the situation that the series from the Game of Thrones creators is “now completely, finally dead” and “won’t live on without them.”

None of this is particularly surprising for the show, which has been largely a non-entity since the show’s announcement drew a heavy backlash after its announcement. The series would have been set in “an alternate timeline, where the southern states have successfully seceded from the Union, giving rise to a nation in which slavery remains legal and has evolved into a modern institution” per the logline. The events in the series would lead into the “third American Civil War.”

There had been some news earlier this year, as HBO boss Casey Bloys said in February that Benioff and Weiss would do the show once they finished their upcoming Star Wars films. However, with the two no longer at the network, HBO has apparently decided to let the project die.
