LA Knight opens up about his mental status while performing the ill-fated Max Dupri character.
Despite garnering success as LA Knight on NXT, the former United States Champion debuted on the main roster in 2022 as ‘Max Dupri,’ the founder of Maximum Male Models and the manager of Mace and Mansoor, and was later joined by storyline sister Maxxine Dupri. However, he eventually reverted to the LA Knight character a few months later.
Speaking to WWE Now at Fanatics Fest, Knight called the Max Dupri character a “career suicide” and detailed his mental state while performing it.
“The level of torture mentally that was for those few months in that. Here’s this thing: ‘I did that brought me to the dance, undeniably, now you want me to just tuck it away over here? That makes sense, sure. Wait, you’re gonna pay me how much? Alright, I’ll think about it.’
But at the same time, I’m still thinking, ‘Alright, this is career suicide.’ This is torpedoing me, and I’m dead in the water at this point. But at the same point, when the opportunity arose that I could do my way, let’s do that, and that’s what we did. Every single person standing right here now, they’re standing here because I got that opportunity to come out and do what I do my way.”

The Megastar is currently embroiled in a feud with The Bloodline. He will team up with Solo Sikoa and Royce Keys and take on The Usos and Jacob Fatu in a six-man tag team match at SummerSlam: Minnesota next month.
