Kyle Fletcher says one of the biggest changes in his AEW career has been the relationship he’s built with Tony Khan. What started as a usual dynamic has turned into something much more comfortable.
Fletcher’s role in AEW has grown significantly since he officially signed with the company in 2022 as one-half of Aussie Open alongside Mark Davis. The pair quickly made an impact by capturing the ROH World Tag Team Championship before Davis’ injury forced Fletcher into singles competition.
Fletcher joined the Don Callis Family, developed his “Protostar” persona and established himself as one of AEW’s top singles stars. Along the way, he captured the ROH World Television Championship before moving into the main-event scene and adding the AEW International Championship to his accolades.
As his position on the card changed, so did his relationship with Khan.
Speaking with The Knockturnal, Fletcher reflected on working with the AEW President and said the two now have “a pretty good relationship.” He described Khan as “really cool” and said their conversations aren’t always about wrestling.
However, Fletcher said Khan is very detail-oriented when it comes to putting together matches and segments. Their conversations can cover everything from how a moment should play out to the exact camera shot AEW wants at the end of a match.
“Yeah, it really depends. Tony’s really cool, and I think at the level that we’re at now, we have a very good friendship relationship outside of just wrestling itself. So our conversations could be anything from just talking about what our weekends were like to… you know, nitty gritty of like, ‘okay, what do you want from me today? What do you want from this segment of this match? What do you want to see from me?’ When we’re talking about stuff, it’s ‘okay, how do you see me reacting to this? What kind of camera shot do you want the end of this segment to be?’ So, you know, it can get as detailed as that, or it can be as laid back as, you know, well, this funny thing happened the other day. Oh, look at this funny video of my cat. You know, we have a pretty good relationship at this point, which is nice.”
