Comment: If you bet on Kamaru Usman winning at UFC 245 and never attempting a takedown, you may have time traveled from the future. Usman stopped the fight in the fifth round when Covington was no longer intelligently defending himself according to the referee (Covington was holding on for dear life and eating punches). If common sense wins out, Usman’s next title challenger would be Jorge Masvidal but Leon Edwards and even Conor McGregor could be in play depending on circumstances beyond our scope.
McGregor returns to action in a welterweight fight next month with “Cowboy” Donald Cerrone. Cerrone last won at 170 when he submitted Mike Perry last year. For McGregor, his last welterweight bout was more than three years ago when he avenged his loss to Nate Diaz.

Comment: Covington was arguably only 50 seconds away from becoming the UFC welterweight champion – one judge had him up 3 rounds to 1 and a second judge was going to decide the fight based on round 5. A possible broken jaw sustained in round 3 and effective body shots from the champion slowed Colby. Multiple knockdowns in the fifth was the beginning of the end and Covington, of course, was upset with the stoppage. Now, Covington will be able to go on and on about how he had his title stolen and, you know the rest. An immediate rematch is unlikely, so perhaps Covington will have to go through Tyron Woodley to get back in the title mix.
