411’s UFC Fight Night 119 Report 10.28.17

October 29, 2017 | Posted by Robert Winfree

Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC Fight Night 119. I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be your host for the evening. The UFC is back in Brazil for this event, and in the main event former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida returns for the first time in over two years to take on top ranked contender Derek Brunson. Also Demian Maia tries to bounce back from his failed title bid as he takes on the hard charging Cobly Covington. The entire main card is pretty good, Jim Miller takes on Francisco Trinaldo in a featured bout and John Lineker is kicking off the main card. This event comes to us from the Ginasio do Ibirapuera in Sao Paula, Brazil with John Gooden and UFC Light Heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier on commentary.

In your regularly scheduled update the changes to the unified rules of MMA have been adopted by the Brazilian commission so you need both palms or fists flat on the mat to be considered downed (or a knee of course), the scoring language is slightly clearer, and extending fingers towards your opponent is a foul regardless of contact being made.

Christian Colombo is 0-1-1 in the UFC and in desperate need of his first UFC win, even in the heavyweight division going winless in your first three appearances likely leads to a pink slip. Marcelo Golm is undefeated coming into his UFC debut and, as the old saying goes, you only get one chance to make a first impression. The odds lean towards the newcomer Golm at -230 to a +180 payout for Colombo.

Heavyweight Bout: Christian Colombo (8-2-1, 258 lbs.) vs. Marcelo Golm (5-0, 242 lbs.)

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Golm for his work this evening. Solid debut from Golm, who’s on the mic now. He says he prepared very hard and knew this was his debut and wasn’t going to be unprepared. Cormier asks about Octagon jitters, he says he was confident in his training and knew if he got this to the mat he’d win. He thanks the fans and hopes they enjoyed the fight, then closes with promising to be coming for the belt soon.

Niko Price is undefeated and has finished all three of his opponents in the UFC, he’s coming off of a win over Alan Jouban and if he can keep the zero at the end of his record in tact tonight he should be facing a top fifteen opponent next. OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Francisco Trinaldo via unanimous decision (29-28 x3)

Solid rebound win for Trinaldo, who gets an interview. He asks the crowd if they like him fighting in Brazil, they do, and he says he likes fighting here but believes MMA should be spread around the world and will fight wherever he’s asked to. He says all he does is train and spend time with his wife and child then promises to be the world’s greatest dad. He closes with something that doesn’t get translated and I don’t recognize.

Pedro Munhoz has only lost to Raphael Assuncao and Jimmie Rivera, he’s on a three fight winning streak and looking to prove he belongs in the discussion of elite level bantamweights in the UFC. Rob Font is 4-1 in the UFC with that lone loss coming to John Lineker, Font is trying to extend his two fight winning streak and climb further up the rankings. The odds are close but lean towards Font, -150 to +120 for Munhoz.

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Munhoz for his work this evening. Munhoz on the mic now, he says fighting here feels awesome and getting a win here was great. He says he feels comfortable boxing but jiu jitsu is his home and is happy to have a good fight for the fans. Cormier asks what he thinks his next for him, he says he’s more than ready, puts over Font as tough as nails and he wants the best fight possible on his way to the title. he closes by asking for a post fight bonus.

Here’s the finish. Munhoz just reads the offense of Font, Font swings wide with his right and leaves a lane for the shorter left of Munhoz to hit the target first. Munhoz had also set this up by working the body a bit, got Font thinking about that rather than his head and he makes him pay. As for the grappling, you can’t afford a sloppy or desperate shot on Munhoz as he’s got a great understanding of chokes from the headlock position, he floats well into mount and has the presence of mind to post with the left arm to finish the one armed guillotine.

Demian Maia just had a seven fight winning streak snapped when he failed to take the welterweight title from Tyron Woodley. Maia needs a win here to prove he’s still a championship level competitor, time is also against the nearly 40 year old Brazilian meaning he really can’t afford that kind of skid at this point. Colby Covington is on a four fight winning streak and looking to stake his claim to a possible title shot if he can take out the top ranked Maia. Covington is the favorite here at -135 while Maia’s underdog status is a tempting value bet even it’s only +105.

Welterweight Bout: #7 Colby Covington (12-1, 171 lbs.) vs. #3 Demian Maia (25-7, 171 lbs.)

SCORECARD: 10-9 Covington, 29-28 Covington overall

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Colby Covington via unanimous decision (29-27, 30-27, 29-26)

That was sloppy and uninteresting from where I sit. Covington on the mic now. He says he should have knocked Maia out, insults Brazil, tells Tyron Woodley he’s coming for the belt and if he doesn’t answer the door he’ll kick it in and take what’s his. That goes untranslated, smart decision because he might have incited a riot given the nature of what he said. The crowd throws stuff at Covington as he’s rushed to the back by security.

Derek Brunson just snapped a two fight losing streak by beating Dan Kelly, he’s trying to defend his top ranking and prove he’s deserving of another shot at the top of the division. Lyoto Machida is on a two fight losing streak and hasn’t fought in over two years, his last appearance was a losing effort to Yoel Romero in June of 2015. Machida is trying to halt that skid and prove to the world he still has what it takes to compete at the highest level of the sport. The odds are with Brunson at -155 to a +125 comeback on Machida.

Middleweight Bout: Lyoto Machida (22-7, 185 lbs.) vs. #6 Derek Brunson (17-5, 185 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Brunson has three inches of reach on Machida while they’re the same height. Both men fighting southpaw. Circling and feinting from both guys, range finding and trying to get a read mostly. Brunson probing with inside leg kicks. Machida lands a bit of a right. Straight left lands for Machida. Brunson misses a left. Another left lands for Machida and he avoids the counters. Brunson lands a looping left that clips Machida, Machida goes off balance and Brunson pounces on him as he’s on the mat and this one is over.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Derek Brunson via KO, punches, at 2:30 of Round 1

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Brunson for his work this evening. Brunson on the mic after that one, the arena is basically silent. He asks Cormier to double check that there’s nothing hidden in his hand wraps, there isn’t. He puts over Machida as a guy who’s never really going to lose his skills and that beating him means a lot. He says he wanted to take his time and saw the opening, he feels like a bad man and invites any middleweight on twitter to call him out. Cormier asks him who he wants next, he tells Cormier that he’s got a pretty good teammate in Luke Rockhold and he’d like that fight.

Here’s the finish, Machida’s right hand is nowhere near where it needs to be exiting this exchange and Brunson’s looping hook catches him cleanly.
