Conor McGregor Undergoes Surgery to Fix Broken Ankle After UFC 264 Loss
Conor McGregor’s ankle break that forced his loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 last night has been repaired following successful surgery on Sunday. TMZ reports that McGregor underwent a 3.5 hour surgery on Sunday afternoon at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles to fix the injury, which happened at the end of the first round of last night’s main event.
McGregor broke the ankle when he stepped back on it and it buckled at the end of the first round, sending him to the mat. Poirier pounced on him but the round ended moments later. McGregor was deemed unable to continue, giving Poirier the win in their rubber match.
TMZ reports that the surgery saw doctors insert a rod into McGregor’s tibia as well as plates and screws in his fibula, and “went very well” according to sources. McGregor is expected to stay at the hospital until Tuesday or Wednesday. The former champion posted to Instagram last night with a photo of him being stretchered out, captioning it, “You need people like me.”
Dana White suggested at last night’s post-show press conference that a fourth fight between Poirier and McGregor is possible, but he would not confirm such a bout. It’s unknown how long McGregor will be out of action.
