Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC 274, I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be your host for the duration. Tonight the UFC is back on PPV but the main event hit a hiccup yesterday at the weigh ins. UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira missed weight by half a pound and once the main event begins will no longer be the champion, if Justin Gaethje is able to beat Oliveira tonight then Gaethje will become the champion but should Oliveira win the belt will be remain vacant. It’s definitely less than ideal circumstances, but the fight itself is still the right kinds of crazy. The co-main event is a rematch some 7 years in the making, back in 2014 Carla Esparza defeated Rose Namajunas for the inaugural UFC strawweight title and now Namajunas is on her second reign going for her second title defense against a surprisingly resurgent Esparza. There’s also a lightweight fight between Michael Chandler and Tony Ferguson, this might be the last stand for Ferguson as a truly elite lightweight while Chandler is trying to get another crack at the belt. The other main card fights are nostalgia bait when Mauricio “Shogun” Rua rematches Ovince Saint Preux and two old veterans go to battle when Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone takes on Joe Lauzon. Further down the card it’s a lot more hoping for good action, but Brandon Royval vs. Matt Schnell has some potential, and Danny Roberts vs. Francisco Trinaldo is poised to overdeliver. Beyond that we’re hoping the very early prelims are better in practice than they are on paper.

UFC 274 comes to the world from the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. We’ve got Jon Anik, Joe Rogan, and Daniel Cormier on commentary. As for the rules, we’re under the newer set so you need both hands on the mat to be downed. There is the limited use of instant replay so it only applies to fight ending sequences. Also we’re in the 30 foot cage instead of the 25 footer that’s that the Apex.

Journey Newson has yet to notch an official win in the UFC, going 0-2 with 1 No Contest during his time in the promotion. Newson is in pretty dire straights here as a fourth failure to win probably ends his time in the UFC. Fernie Garcia brings a five fight winning streak into his UFC debut and now looks to capitalize on his lone chance to make a good first impression. The newcomer Garcia is the -130 favorite to +110 on Newson.

Bantamweight Bout: Fernie Garcia (10-1, 135.5 lbs.) vs. Journey Newson (9-3 1 NC, 135.5 lbs.)

Solid performance from Newson, who gets an interview. He says the kicking game was used to counter the boxing heavy approach of Garcia, and he doesn’t just want to be a wrestler. He puts over his coaches and training partners to close.

Unfortunate news, but the fight between Donald Cerrone and Joe Lauzon is off due to a Cerrone illness that’s non-COVID related and from the description sounds like food poisoning. Well that sucks, hopefully Cerrone recovers quickly. Now Randy Brown and Khaos Williams will open the PPV.

Ariane Carnelossi has gone 2-1 in the UFC and is on a two fight winning streak, if she can extend that streak to three here it could earn her a shot at a slightly more recognizable name next time out. Lupita Godinez has traded wins and losses while going 2-2 in the UFC, but she’s coming off of a win and could get her first UFC winning streak up and running tonight. Godinez is the -170 favorite while the +150 payout on Carnelossi is a tempting value bet.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Lupita Godinez via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-26 x2)

Big performance from Godinez there, and she gets an interview as well. First she puts over her team and she’s just very happy for the opportunity and would be willing to fight next weekend if necessary. She talks about some of her preparation and feels she’s finally showing the results of that work. She calls herself the best in the world, people just don’t know it yet.

Kleydson Rodrigues has a six fight winning streak going and will be looking to extend that here while getting his first UFC win. CJ Vergara had a five fight winning streak snapped in his UFC debut last year, now he’s back in action and trying to get that critical first UFC win under his belt. SCORECARD: 10-9 Rodrigues, 29-28 Rodrigues overall

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – CJ Vergara via split decision (28-29, 29-28 x2)

Hm, interesting scorecards as I’m not sure either the first or third were all that close but I’m not dying on that hill. Mic time for Vergara, he dedicates the win to a friend who passed and gives love to his son who’s in the crowd. This wasn’t the fight he wanted and puts over Rodrigues as a tough opponent. He wanted to use pressure and create chaos in the fight.

Tracy Cortez is on a nine fight winning streak that includes three wins in the UFC, if she can get another win here she’ll take a step towards ranked opposition in the relatively shallow flyweight division. Melissa Gatto is undefeated including two wins in the UFC, and just like her opponent she’s trying to make the difficult transition from prospect to contender. The odds lean towards Cortez at -140 to a +120 comeback for Gatto.

Andre Fialho has gone 1-1 in the UFC but he stopped Miguel Baeza in his last fight and now looks to build his first UFC winning streak and continue moving up the welterweight ranks. Cameron VanCamp is on a four fight winning streak coming into his UFC debut, if he’s able to slow down the building hype around Fialho it’ll be a great introduction to the UFC audience. Fialho is a large favorite at -425 to +320 for VanCamp.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Andre Fialho via KO, punches, at 2:35 of Round 1

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Fialho for his work this evening. Mic time for Fialho, he says he wasn’t focused early and got tagged a little because of it then thanks the UFC brass before saying he’d like to fight in Singapore when the UFC goes there later this year. This man just wants to fight all the time. He talks us through the finish then thanks some people in Portuguese.

Here’s a look at the finish. VanCamp tries a left hook right uppercut combination, but he doesn’t set it up or move his head and if you just kind of swing an uppercut in like this the counter hook on the same side is wide open every time. Fialho has a good left hook to begin with and here he times it well into a wide open punching lane.

Well that’s it for early prelims, though the rest of the prelims can still be found on ESPN+ as there’s something on ESPN running long they’ll also be on ESPN News until that wraps up.

Blagoy Ivanov has gone 2-3 in the UFC and is on a two fight losing streak, granted both were split decisions but he still needs a win rather badly to avoid the dreaded three fight skid. Marcos Rogerio de Lima is on a two fight winning streak and if he can get to three in a row here he could easily take Ivanov’s top fifteen ranking. Ivanov is your -140 favorite to +120 for de Lima.

Brandon Royval has gone 3-2 in the UFC and is coming off of a win, he’s trying to build another winning streak as well as leverage his win over Kai Kara-France to move up the flyweight ranks. Matt Schnell has been bouncing between flyweight and bantamweight during his time in the UFC, but at flyweight he last defeated Tyson Nam and is trying to continue his climb up the ranks with a win over another ranked opponent. Now Royval jumps on a guillotine and Schnell taps out.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Brandon Royval via Submission, guillotine choke, at 2:14 of Round 1

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Royval for his work this evening. Mic time for Royval after that, he calls himself the most exciting flyweight then plays with the crowd. He talks us through the finish and puts over his coaches then says he would have beaten Brandon Moreno when they fought if his shoulder hadn’t popped out and says he wants the next title shot. He’ll probably need one more win but he’s not far away from the title picture.

Here’s the finish, this is a really nice guillotine choke. You can see how deep the arm gets around the neck and he probably could have finished this without closing the grip. Royval is a serious problem at flyweight.

Macy Chiasson has gone 5-2 in the UFC but she’s coming off of a loss and is trying to avoid her first ever losing streak. Norma Dumont missed weight for this fight, never a good thing, but she’s on a three fight winning streak and given the total lack of other featherweight fighters on the women’s side of things if she can win here she might be able to get a title shot. The odds are with Dumont at -225 to a +185 comeback for Chiasson.

The crowd is booing this, and Chiasson tries to suck up to the crowd with only mild success. She feels better at featherweight than bantamweight but she just wants to keep fighting and will go to either weight class.

Michael Chandler has gone 1-2 in the UFC and is on a two fight losing streak, that’s somewhat mitigated by one of those being a title shot with Charles Oliveira and the other a fight for the ages against Justin Gaethje but he still needs to avoid a three fight skid here if he wants to retain his position in the title picture. Tony Ferguson is a former interim champion in the UFC but he currently finds himself on a three fight losing streak, granted those were all to very good fighters but at nearly 40 and with 11 years in the UFC he cannot afford a fourth loss here if he wants to stay a relevant fighter at the top of the stacked lightweight division. Given how Ferguson has been slipping lately it’s no surprise that Chandler is the favorite at a hefty -320 to +250 on Ferguson.

Well, that’s a KO of the year contender. Mic time for Chandler, he jokes he doesn’t even train that technique that much but Ferguson keeps his hands wide and leaves openings up the middle. He talks us through the finish and says you’ve got to pull out the depths of yourself when you’re down and he did. He says he’s ready to come back to the main event and that there’s no one doesn’t want to see him rematch either Charles Oliveira or Justin Gaethje, but if someone else gets that title shot he’s willing to fight Conor McGregor at welterweight and he’ll see us at the top.

We get the announcement of the latest Hall of Fame inductee, it’s former two division champion Daniel Cormier. No issues with that.

The crowd boos over all of this. Esparza gets an interview, she thought she was the more aggressive fighter and deserved to win, again prompting boos. She says you never want to be part of a fight like that (her record disagrees) but she got the win and that’s all that counts. On the plus side her face looks good for her wedding next week.

Charles Oliveira is on a 10 fight winning streak and was the UFC lightweight champion, but he missed weight and was stripped of the title, now he’s hoping a win will secure a shot at the vacant belt for his next fight while putting the weight gaff behind him and reaffirm his status as the best lightweight in the world. Justin Gaethje previously fought for the lightweight title in 2020 and now gets another shot as if he’s able to win here he will claim the vacant title. Gaethje is coming off of a win and wants to begin building his own championship legacy with a win over the former champion here. The odds for this one have been a bit all over the place since Oliveira missed weight, but they still favor Oliveira at -154 while the +125 payout on Gaethje is a tempting bet.

He says the entire division still has to deal with him, he’s still the real champion. Asked who he’d like to fight for the vacant title he says he doesn’t care but name drops Conor McGregor.

Well on that note UFC 274 comes to a close. The main event delivered for as long as it lasted, and Michael Chandler gave us a knockout of the year. Let us never speak of Namajunas vs. Esparza again. Well, I’ll have to because we’ll be breaking down all the fallout tomorrow on the 411 Ground and Pound MMA Podcast as well as looking ahead to next week’s UFC on ESPN 36 headlined by Aleksandar Rakic taking on former champion Jan Blachowicz. I’ll be back next week for that event and I hope you will too. Until then thank you again for reading, stay safe out there, and keep checking 411mania for all of your pop culture needs.
