During a recent interview with ComicBook.com, former WWE Superstar John Cena commended his former in-ring rival Cody Rhodes for how he’s been promoting his role as Guile in the new Street Fighter movie, dressed as the character. Cena compared it to how he’d promote The Suicide Squad movie and its spin-off, Peacemaker, dressed as the Christopher Smith character. Below are some highlights:
John Cena on Who Had It Worse Between Cody Rhodes’ Guile Wig Versus His Peacemaker Helmet
“Well, goodness. Worse is like the half-empty perspective. You know me, I’m a full [clears throat] guy. And what I admire about both of those things is that when we were doing the Suicide Squad from WWE, I learned that how important it is to show the character, be in character, show the uniform. So, The Suicide Squad was a movie with a bunch of superheroes. I chose to do all the media in character because nobody knew Peacemaker. And because of that, that was my — might have been a small piece of allowing Peacemaker to exist in a universe beyond the Suicide Squad.
“I champion Cody for his ability to lean into his part. And people know Cody Rhodes, but maybe people don’t remember Guile from Street Fighter. Or maybe people It brings up nostalgia to see somebody dressed as Guile from Street Fighter. I really — hats off to Cody for being brave enough to take a moment that could be focused on him as a person, and he realizes that it’s larger than that and the goal is to make sure people enjoy the movie and know your character when you see it. I think it’s a heck of an idea by him.”
On Whether He Thinks Cody Rhodes Got the Idea To Dress Up as the Character From Him
“Whether I was where he got it from or not, I’m very proud of him for his choice, and I think it’s a great decision for the movie.”
As previously reported, Cody Rhodes appeared at UFC 332 in full costume and wig as Guile. The new Street Fighter movie, co-starring Rhodes, opens in theaters on October 16.
Meanwhile, John Cena stars in Matchbox: The Movie, which debuts on Apple TV+ on October 9.
