Walter Koenig, known worldwide for his role as Ensign Pavel Chekov in the original Star Trek, has passed away. Deadline cites Koenig’s rep as confirming that the actor passed away of natural causes in North Hollywood. He was 90 years old.

Koenig had a prolific career that lasted almost 65 years, but for many he will always be known as the young Ensign Chekov on the USS Enterprise in the original Star Trek series from 1967 through 1969, as well as the first seven films from the franchise. He reprised the role in appearances on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: New Voyages, and a voice appearance on Star Trek: Picard.

Born in Chicago, Koenig was the son of Russian immigrants, Isadore Koenig and Sarah Koenig. He initially went to school with a major in pre-med before receiving a BA in psychology at UCLA. It was the encouragement of a professor that made him give acting a real go, and he began attending Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City.

He appeared in a number of TV roles, including the pilot for ABC’s General Hospital and three episodes of Mr. Novak, before he landed his breakthrough role as Chekov on the second season of Star Trek. He was brought onto the series to attract a younger demographic, and though the show only lasted for three seasons, it of course became a cultural touchstone, and Koenig would be forever associated with the franchise.

Koenig had many roles outside of Star Trek, including a run as the villainous Psi Cop Alfred Bester in Babylon 5 and appearances on shows like Columbo, Son of the Beach, and Mannix. On the big screen, he appeared in the 2013 drama Blue Dream and the 1989 sci-fi film Moontrap. He was also a screenwriter, writing episodes of the 1970s Land of the Lost TV series among others.

Outside of his film and TV work, Koenig was known for his humanitarian efforts to help the people of Burma fight back against human rights violations committed by the country’s dictatorship. He remained close to many of his Star Trek castmates and served as best man for George Takai’s wedding in 2008.

On behalf of 411, our condolences to the family, friends, and many fans of Walter Koenig. He will be missed.
