It looks like UFC fighter Kelvin Gastelum has once again found himself in hot water over making weight. As previously reported, Gastelum weighed in at 184 pounds yesterday for his scheduled middleweight co-main event bout against Darren Till at UFC 244. However, it was noted by many observers that he appeared to be touching or possibly leaning on his coach, Rafael Cordeiro, while he was weighing in yesterday. MMAFighting reports that the New York State Athletic Commission has ruled that what Gastelum did was in violation of the rules, and the commission will be seeking disciplinary action.

The statement from NYSAC spokesperson Mercedes Padilla on the Kelvin Gastelum situation reads as follows:

“The Commission has reviewed the footage of Mr. Gastelum’s weigh-in. The Commission has determined that Mr. Gastelum made contact with another person while on the scale, a violation of the weigh in policy. In light of this violation, the Commission will pursue disciplinary action. At this time, the official weight determination will not be disturbed, and Mr. Gastelum will not be disqualified from competing in UFC 244, as the possible contact indicated in the video cannot be said to have materially impacted Mr. Gastelum’s weight to the extent that he would have exceeded the applicable weight limit allowable for competition in the match.”

Initially, the commission told ESPN’s Marc Raimondi earlier this week that the NYSAC would review the footage to determine if disciplinary action needed to be pursued. NYSAC weigh-in policy states that combatants are not allowed to make physical contact with anyone while weighing in on the scale. NYSAC officials who were present at the weigh-ins did not appear to take issue with Gastelum’s apparent contact with Cordeiro during his weigh-in session, where it looked like Gastelum’s elbow was leaning on Cordeiro’s chest.

Cordeiro denied any wrongdoing in a statement to MMAFighting. He said, “People are tripping. I went there to check his weight. How am I going to lift him two pounds with my chest? They are crazy. They are tripping. It’s drama to sell the fight. There’s no way. There’s no way.”

He added: “There were two athletic commission officials there, I was in front of the whole world – that’s impossible. It doesn’t even cross my mind to try to break the law. The kid made weight, two pounds under. He did his job. He was the last one, he was sweating, running like a maniac, working hard, and got the job done. Everyone has a mouth and can say whatever they want.”

For now, it looks like Gastelum’s fight with Till will move forward. It’s set for later today at UFC 244 at the Madison Square Garden in New York City. The main card will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
