Hey everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC on ESPN+ 63, I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be your host for the evening. I wont lie to you all, this isn’t a great card on paper. The main event is the return of former strawweight champion Jessica Andrade to the strawweight division after a brief stint at flyweight where she failed to capture the title. Opposite Andrade is rising contender Amanda Lemos, this represents easily the biggest test that Lemos has ever faced but a win would put her pretty close to the title picture. Elsewhere on the card we’ve got a rather interesting featherweight fight between Lando Vannata and Charles Jourdain, rising heavyweight Alexandr Romanov is back in action, and on the prelims Tyson Pedro is back in action for the first time since 2018. The welterweight fight between Dwight Grant and Sergey Khandozhko might be worth keeping an eye on as well, but beyond that it’s pretty slim pickings on paper. That said we could get something entertaining practice, so let’s hope for that.

UFC on ESPN+ 63 comes to the world from the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Brendan Fitzgerald, Daniel Cormier, and Paul Felder will be calling the action. As for the rules Nevada uses most of the newer ones though you still only need one hand on the mat to be considered downed. We will have the use of instant replay and the fight can be restarted after it’s used if applicable. Also keep in mind we’re in the smaller 25 foot diameter Octagon.

Dean Barry is on a three fight winning streak coming into his UFC debut, now he’s trying to extend that streak and get that all important first UFC win. Mike Jackson has been out of action since fighting to a No Contest in his UFC debut back in 2018, he’s finally back and looking to get his first professional win. Barry is one of the biggest favorites on the entire card at -1125 to +700 for Jackson.

Welterweight Bout: Dean Barry (4-1, 170.5) vs. Mike Jackson (0-1 1 NC, 170)

ROUND ONE: Jackson is four inches taller but only two inches of reach, Jackson is also 8 years older. They touch gloves to get us going. Some early side kicks from Barry as they circle. Bit of a right from Barry but he’s overswinging just a bit. Jackson lands a left hook. A lot of Barry missing rights and Jackson using a left to counter. The nerves in Barry are obvious right now. Barry lands a bit of a right and off balances Jackson then lands a side kick to the body. Stiff left from Jackson. Bit of a right from Barry but he’s a touch too predictable with his offense. Barry lands a jab. Spinning back kick from Barry hits the groin of Jackson and we’ve got a time out. Replay easily confirms the low blow, Jackson is in some serious pain. After 2:15 we’re back to fighting. Barry lands a hook kick then some side kicks to the knee. More side kicks from Barry then he lands a right hand. Jackson tries to tie up but Barry lands a knee then separates. Barry lands a right hand. Barry backs Jackson to the fence and drops him with a few punches but Jackson is able to tie up and come up in a clinch. They break without incident. Barry lands a right in close. More punches from Barry along the fence line, then a jumping knee but Jackson wont go away. They clinch and as Barry looks to break Jackson complains of an eye poke so we’ve got another time out. Replay shows there was definitely an eye gouge as Barry was framing and separating. The doctor is in to check on Jackson, Jackson can’t open his right eye and we’re done here.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Mike Jackson via Disqualification (eye poke) at 3:52 of of Round 1

The ref ruled that an intentional foul hence the DQ. I don’t hate that ruling, fouls need to carry some more consequence.

Marcin Prachnio has gone 2-3 in the UFC and snapped a three fight losing streak last year that led to his current two fight winning streak, now he’s trying to get his UFC record to the .500 mark with another win. The odds are close on this one but lean towards Prachnio at -115 to an even -105 for Lins.

Mic time for Parsons, he calls the first UFC win a dream come true and talks about how much he’s worked for this moment. He gives love to his family and coaches. He puts over Elder but knew he could time the takedowns off of Elder’s kicks and feels that putting everything together is the best way to succeed.

We get an update, there was some health issue with Chase Sherman and they’re canceling his fight with Alexandr Romanov.

Aori Qileng has gone 0-2 in the UFC, now he’s moving up to bantamweight to try and breathe some life into his UFC run. Cameron Else had a six fight winning streak snapped in his UFC debut back in 2020, now he’s back in action and trying to find his first taste of success in the promotion. The odds are with Aori at -240 while the +195 payout on Else might tempt a few bettors.

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Aoriqileng for his work this evening. Mic time for Aoriqileng and his translator, he says the win feels fantastic. He talks us through the finish and thanks his coaches. Asked about the move to bantamweight he says this is his division. To close he thanks a few more people.

Here’s the finish, Else can’t address the hooks or the overall position so while he’s blocking most of the punches there’s no real hope of him stopping the onslaught.

Tyson Pedro has been out of action since December of 2018 when he lost to Mauricio Rua, he’s shown potential at times but now needs to reintroduce himself to the audience given the long layoff and two fight losing streak. Ike Villanueva has gone 1-4 in the UFC and is on his second two fight losing streak, he needs a win here just for a bit of job security as a loss could easily send him packing from the promotion. Despite the long layoff the odds are with Pedro at -630 while the +450 comeback on Villanueva is a somewhat tempting long shot bet.

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Pedro for his work this evening. Pedro gets an interview after the win, he can’t even put into words how hard it’s been over the three plus years he’s been out of action. He tried really hard not to rush in this fight and was able to show that he can fight more controlled. He talks us through the finish then says he wants to fight soon and get back to making money.

Here’s the finish. Pedro had been chopping at the calves all fight and finally lands a really nasty one here that drops Villanueva. The follow up rights as Villanueva is seated against the fence are brutal.

Dwight Grant has gone 3-3 in the UFC, he’s coming off of a loss and is trying to avoid his first ever losing streak. Sergey Khandozhko has gone 1-1 in the UFC but as last seen in 2019 dropping a decision to Rustam Khabilov, now he’s back and looking to elevate his UFC record above the .500 mark. Mic time for Khandozhko, he’s happy and notes he’s been dreaming about this moment for years since he had his first knee injury. He talks us through the finish and puts over Grant as a tough fighter and a good guy.

Here’s the finish. Khandozhko doubles up on his left side attack, digging to the body then coming up to the head, and that’s a classic attack for a reason.

That does it for the prelims, though we’re still on ESPN+ for the main card.

Jordan Wright has gone 2-2 in the UFC trading wins and losses along the way, he’s coming off of a loss and is trying to avoid his first ever losing streak. Marc-Andre Barriault took this fight on short notice, hence the catchweight, and while he lost his first fight of the year back in February he’s hoping to get his year back on track with a win here. The odds are with Barriault at -195 to +165 for Wright.

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Barriault for his work this evening. Mic time for Barriault after that, he’s happy to be here and winning. He likes his job and is always down for shot notice fights. He talks us through the finish, he wasn’t planning on the submission but his coaches saw it and told him to go for it and he did. Asked about the future he doesn’t have a concrete answer, he’d just like to fight in front of a crowd.

This is a nice guillotine from Barriault, it’s kind of a slow developing position but Wright never takes the correct steps to address the threat and by the time he realizes the extent of the danger it’s far too late.

Lando Vannata has been trading wins, losses, and draws for his entire UFC run but he won his featherweight debut in his last fight and is now trying to get his first winning streak since 2016 up and running. Charles Jourdain has likewise traded wins and losses with a draw tossed in for good measure during his time in the UFC, he also won his last fight and is now trying to get his first UFC winning streak up and running. OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Charles Jourdain via Submission, guillotine choke, at 2:32 of Round 1

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Jourdain for his work this evening. That was fun for as long as it lasted. Mic time for Jourdain, he felt pressure to get the first round win after fellow Canadian Barriault did so, then he puts over Vannata as the toughest guy he’s fought. He talks us through the finish, then when asked who he’d like to fight next he says he’d like to fight Edson Barboza. That’s a pretty gutsy call out. To close he puts over a few sponsors.

Second guillotine finish in a row. Here you can see Jourdain know when to switch from a one armed attack to bringing the other hand to bear, and Vannata can’t get around the guard in time which means he’s forced to tap.

Clay Guida has been with the UFC since 2006 but has gone just 2-3 in his last five fights, he is coming off of a win though and could get his first winning streak since 2017 up and running if he’s victorious tonight. Claudio Puelles has gone 4-1 in the UFC and is on a four fight winning streak, a win here would be one of the biggest scalps on his resume in terms of name value and could secure him an even bigger opportunity next time. The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Puelles for his work this evening. Mic time for Puelles and his translator after that impressive submission, he plays with the crowd with pretty good English and talks about the journey and changes he’s made to his life to be here. He’s not here for a fight or two, he wants to fight the best. He talks us through the finish, then when asked what he wants next he’d like a top fifteen guy if possible but he’d really like to call out Twitter for not verifying him. To close he thanks some sponsors then says he’d like a spot on the Spanish commentary team.

Seriously, check out the speed of this kneebar. Puelles is a dangerous grappler.

Amanda Lemos has gone 5-1 in the UFC and is undefeated at strawweight, now she’s got a chance for the biggest win of her career when she takes on a highly regarded former champion. Jessica Andrade is a former strawweight champion, she recently moved up to flyweight and went 2-1 at that weight where she only lost in a title fight, now she’s back at 115 and looking for a notable win to reinsert herself into the title picture. The odds are with Andrade at -225 to a +185 payout for a Lemos win.

Strawweight Bout: Jessica Andrade (22-9, 115.5 lbs.) vs. #10 Amanda Lemos (11-1-1, 115 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Lemos is two and a half inches taller with three inches of reach advantage. They touch gloves to get us going. Both women are pretty flat on their feet to start. Lemos is looking to jab as they feel each other out. Not a lot of aggression from Andrade, definitely not the norm for her. Both women start showing the jab, then Lemos lands a leg kick. Some stance switching from Lemos, Andrade lands a couple of kicks in response and Lemos goes orthodox again. Andrade avoids a hook. Calf kick from Lemos lands. Jumping kick from Andrade partially lands. Lemos lands a front kick to the face. Andrade punches into a clinch and grabs a standing arm triangle choke. Andrade is strong enough to finish this standing if she wants, the choke is pretty tight and Lemos fights to stay in front but the squeeze of Andrade is too much and Lemos taps.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Jessica Andrade via Submission, standing arm triangle choke, at 3:13 of Round 1

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mrs. Andrade for her work this evening. Mic time for Andrade and her translator, she just got the first standing arm triangle win in UFC history, she thanks her team and friends for all of their support. She thanks her coaches for seeing the chance for that submission and helping her drill it in preparation for this fight. Asked about returning to strawweight despite having success at flyweight she wanted to return to her division and wants another shot at the title. She talks us through the finish and thinks that was bonus worthy. To close she wishes Happy Birthday to her sister, thanks her family and friends in attendance and feels she’ll get back to the top.
