What Weaknesses can McGregor Exploit in Las Vegas?
Floyd Mayweather will go down in history as one of the greatest boxers of all-time but MMA star Conor McGregor will fancy his chances of causing a major upset ahead of the widely anticipated bout in Las Vegas on August 26th.
McGregor, a pioneer of the Mixed Martial Arts scene, has been one of the sport’s more versatile characters and it wasn’t a huge surprise to see the Irishman make the switch to boxing – especially for such a lucrative fight.
On paper, this is only going one way and that is in favour of Mayweather. After all, he is a boxing legend, one with a 100% winning record with 49 victories from 49 bouts at a professional level.
Is it Possible to Stop Mayweather?
Mayweather’s weakness is finishing his opponents off; he has recorded just 26 knockouts at the top level of the sport. With that in mind, McGregor may head into this contest with a defensive-minded approach and the MMA veteran will try to win the odd round by picking his shots.
Unfortunately, it is very difficult to do that against somebody like Mayweather. Over the course of his illustrious boxing career, the American has made a name for himself as being one of boxing’s most effective and efficient figures.
While he is now on the wrong side of 40 years old, Mayweather’s style and ability to look after himself in the ring should give him the edge against his younger and fitter, albeit unorthodox, opponent in McGregor. If nothing else, it is sure to be a memorable bout at the very least.
McGregor oozes confidence but that can only get him so far. Mayweather’s defence could be too much for the Irishman – especially if the 40-year-old controls the middle of the ring.
A large chunk of MMA supporters will be cheering their hero on in Las Vegas on the night but it is hard to envision a Mayweather slip up. One more win takes him to 50 successive wins on the professional circuit and he will further cement his spot as one of the greatest fighters of all-time.
What do the Odds Suggest?
At the time of writing, Mayweather is the clear favorite to win the bout and many boxing fans cannot see this one going the distance, with odds of 8/13 on a KO. The popular bet is for Money to win in the sixth round (16/1).
This Mayweather v McGregor betting tips piece, predicts that the American fighter will win by TKO, KO or disqualification (odds of 17/20). Plenty of punters will have the opportunity to voice their own opinions prior to August’s historic battle.
Conor McGregor deserves plenty of credit and respect for taking this fight on. He is going into the ring with a legend of the boxing arena and he will probably struggle. However, he will win over most neutrals with his charisma and persona, and the Irishman will probably give himself a chance of mounting a late challenge.
Beating Mayweather is easier said than done and it is hard to envision a McGregor victory but he will push the American close and that is all anybody can ask for.
