Game of Thrones may have had a contentious final season, but it was the clear frontrunner in the 2019 Emmy Nominations. The Television Academy announced the nominations on Tuesday morning, with the HBO series leading the way at a record-breaking total of 32 nominations. That includes nods for Outstanding Drama Series, Lead Actor (Kit Harington), Lead Actress (Emilia Clarke), three nominations for Supporting Actor (Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and…Alfie Allen?), and a dominant four out of six nominations for Supporting Actress (Gwendoline Christie, Lena Headey, Sophie Turner, and Maisie Williams).

Thrones was expected to lead the way in nominations, particularly since it is the last time for the Academy to honor the series. But it is up against some hefty competition in the Drama Series category, where it faces fellow veterans like Better Call Saul and This Is Us alongside newcomers like Pose and fan-favorite dark horse candidates like Killing Eve and Bodyguard. Netflix’s Ozark and HBO’s Succession also earned nods in that category.

Outside of the Drama categories, the big winners among the nominations were Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and HBO’s Chernobyl. Maisel ruled the comedy categories with a total of 20 nods, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Lead Actress (Rachel Brosnahan), two Supporting Actress nominations (Alex Borstein and Marin Hinkle) and one Supporting Actor nod (Tony Shalhoub). Surprisingly quiet was Veep, which earned just nine nods for its final season including expected Outstanding Comedy Series and Lead Actress (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) nods. Maisel and Veep will face HBO’s Barry, Amazon’s Fleabag, Netflix’s Russian Doll, NBC’s The Good Place, and Pop TV’s Schitt’s Creek in the Comedy Series race.

Chernobyl had 19 nominations to power into the Limited Series and TV Movie Races, edging out FX’s Fosse/Verdon (17) and Netflix’s When They See Us (16). The critically-acclaimed drama earned nods for Outstanding Limited Series, Lead Actor (Jared Harris), Supporting Actress (Emily Watson) and Supporting Actor (Stellan SkarsgÃ¥rd).
