The Shape of Water Academy Awards

The Shape of Water took the lion’s share of statues at the 90th annual Academy Awards. Guillermo Del Toro’s 1950s-set fantasy romantic drama won four awards at the 2018 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director for Del Toro, Best Production Design and Best Score (Alexandre DeSplat).

The wins weren’t entirely unexpected, but they contributed to a running theme at the award show of genre film getting recognized. Fantasy, horror and science fiction are often shut out at the Oscars outside of possible visual effects and makeup awards, but this year saw those genres win seven awards including some of the main ones, thanks to Shape of Water. Get Out was also a big winner, becoming a rare horror film to win an Oscar when Jordan Peele took home Best Original Screenplay. Blade Runner 2049 won two Oscars, for Best Cinematography — winning Roger A. Deakins his first Oscar in fourteen tries — and Best Visual Effects.

It wasn’t just about genre film, though. The acting awards went to more traditional fare, with Frances McDormand winning Best Actress for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Gary Oldman taking Best Actor for Darkest Hour. Sam Rockwell gave Three Billboards its other Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, while Allison Janney won Best Supporting Actress for I, Tonya. Best Adapted Screenplay went to James Ivory for the gay romantic drama Call Me By Your Name.

The other multiple winners were Christopher Nolan’s war drama Dunkirk, which took home three technical wins, and Coco which won Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. The full list of winners is below:
