A24 has reportedly added an iconic franchise to its roster, landing the film and TV rights for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Deadline reports that the studio is winning the rights for the famed slasher franchise, which went up for bid back in March.

As of now, the deal has not yet closed but A24 is in the position to win the rights. The plan from the studio is to queue up a TV series that comes from JT Mollner, Roy Lee and Glen Powell. Powell would not star as had previously been speculated. Lee was looking to make a Netflix movie in the franchise, and that is still on the table with A24 as a producer.

The original film, directed by Tobe Hooper, came out in 1974 and was a massive hit as it helped define the slasher genre along with Black Christmas, which released in Canada the same month. Texas Chain Saw Massacre has comprised nine films and two reboots, grossing a combined $252.8 million worldwide against a combined $50 million budget. The most recent entry, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, was released on Netflix and was polarizing among fans.

Should the deal close, A24 would add the franchise to another classic slasher franchise, Friday the 13th, in its stable. The studio is producing a prequel series to that franchise, Crystal Lake, which will air on Peacock.
