In a new interview with the Associated Press (via Entertainment Weekly), screenwriter Aaron Sorkin said that there should be a sequel to The Social Network, which won Sorkin an Academy Award for Best Screenplay in 2011. Here are highlights:

On a sequel to The Social Network: “First of all, I know a lot more about Facebook in 2005 than I do in 2018 — but, I know enough to know that there should be a sequel.”

On if the sequel could happen: “I’ve gotten more than one email from [producer Scott Rudin] with an article attached saying, ‘Isn’t it time for a sequel?”’ said Sorkin, adding: “A lot of very interesting, dramatic stuff has happened since the movie ends with settling the lawsuit from the Winklevoss twins and Eduardo Saverin.”

Facebook was the center of controversy last year when they revealed that around 2.7 million people in the European Union may have been hit by improper data sharing with political consultancy firm Cambridge Analytica. Facebook has also been criticized for its role in sharing misinformation and “fake news,” particularly during politically charged events like the 2016 Presidential election.
