Agents of SHIELD Will Likely End After Seven Seasons

Agents of SHIELD has had one of the strangest lifespans for a comic book television series. Starting out with a huge amount of hype, the show had disappointing initial ratings and was creatively uneven at best. But after a couple of wobbly seasons, the series found its footing creatively. That footing came a little late for its ratings, and the series has been one of ABC’s lower-rated series for its last few seasons but has still managed to survive due to a variety of reasons — not the least of which was a loyal fanbase and strong time-shifted/SVOD ratings.

The latest development in the series came when the show, which has moved to become a summer series starting with its upcoming sixth season, was given an early season seven renewal. According to Clark Gregg though, that is likely the end of its run.

“That’s the word I’ve heard,” said Gregg at a Captain Marvel press tour per Den of Geek). “The announcement I read was, two more seasons, six and seven.”

Gregg said that he isn’t at all certain what will happen with season seven though. There is always the chance that the show could continue on if it becomes a summer hit — something that has a lower bar than a fall-spring show. For now, Gregg is focused on what’s coming immediately, saying, “I can’t wait for people to see Season 6. People who have been on the journey with me and with Phil Coulson are going to get something very, very different.”

The new season arrives in May.
