The sixth season of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD will premiere next summer. ABC announced on Tuesday that the show will air as a summer 2019 series for its upcoming season. TV Line confirmed with ABC president Channing Dungey that the decision was ABC’s alone and wasn’t necessarily to fit the show into Marvel Cinematic Universe scheduling — such as the fact that Avengers 4 premieres next May.
Dungey said that season six, while shortened, may not be the final season. He said, “I feel like Season 5 was their creatively strongest yet, so I don’t at the moment have any plans to think of Season 6 as the last season…What we’ve discovered is that we have a very loyal and passionate fan base for S.H.I.E.L.D. The show does incredibly well for us in delayed viewing. By putting it in the summer, we’re going to be able to ‘super-serve’ the fan base that loves that show and hopefully give it an opportunity to continue on longer than we would if it was [scheduled] in-season.”
ABC renewed the show for a thirteen-episode sixth season on Monday. The season five finale, “The End,” airs Friday at 9 PM ET/PT.
