Max Headroom is making a comeback, with AMC developing a reboot of the series with Matt Frewer set to return. Deadline reports that the 1980s icon is returning in a reboot of the series at AMC Networks, with Christopher Cantwell (Halt & Catch Fire) set to write and serve as showrunner. The show is being produced through Elijah Wood and Daniel Noah’s SpectreVision and All3Media.

Max Headroom was created by George Stone, Annabel Jankel, and Rocky Morton and began life as a “computer-generated” TV host in the 1985 British TV movie titled Max Headroom: 20 Minutes into the Future. Frewer played the role of the titular character, a journalist who was forced into a motorcyle accident while fleeing enemies and had his mind copied into an AI program that is used as a TV host but who takes aim at corporations around the world with his sarcasm and commentary.

The character became an instant hit, and began hosting a music video series before getting his own TV series Max Headroom, which ran on ABC for two seasons starting in 1987. In the years following, he has remained a touchstone for late 1980s pop culture and is regularly referenced in that capacity.

Cantwell, Frewer and Lisa Whalen will serve as executive producers on the rebooted series alongside Wood and Noah.
