Anya Taylor-Joy Mad Max Furiosa

Anya Taylor-Joy is set to take over for Charlize Theron in the Mad Max prequel spinoff Furiosa, with two superhero stars along for the ride. Deadline reports that Taylor-Joy (The Witch, The New Mutants) will star as the titular character in the film, which George Miller back to direct and co-write with Nico Lathouris. The film is set up at Warner Bros., who released Mad Max: Fury Road.

Miller and Lathouris wrote the Fury Road script together, with Miller directing the 2015 film. The movie had a bit of a long path to profit for the studio but it was a critical smash and earned 10 Oscar nominations, of which it won six. Theron added more cred to her action chops with her role as Furiosa in the movie, the Imperator who teams up with Tom Hardy’s Max to drive a water tyrant’s five sex slaves to a safe place.

Miller has been working on Furiosa for quite a while and movement began in earnest this year. It was reported in March that Miller had met with Taylor-Joy for the role, which Theron is not returning to as it’s set many years before the last film. In addition to Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth will star along with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who has made a splash as Black Manta in Aquaman and earned an Emmy for his work on Watchmen.

There’s no release date or production start date yet for the film.
