Avatar: The Way of Water Tops $1 Billion Globally

Avatar: The Way of Water has officially topped the $1 billion mark globally, reports Variety. James Cameron’s sequel to 2009’s Avatar, which still stands as the highest grossing movie in history at $2.9 billion, has now earned $1,030,118,839, topping $1 billion in just 14 days (the fastest of any 2022 release). Top Gun: Maverick is currently 2022’s highest grossing film with $1.4 billion globally, and Way of Water has a good shot at surpassing that.
The Way of Water clocked in at a $335 million budget, with an over $100 million marketing budget, and while Cameron claimed that the film would need to hit $2 billion to break even, Variety reports that experts believe the true break even number is closer to $1.5 billion. The expectation at this point is that The Way of Water should top that number.
A third Avatar film is scheduled to be released on December 20th, 2024, with future sequels planned if The Way of Water and Avatar 3 perform well enough at the box office.
