Barack Obama Negotiating With Netflix To Provide New Shows

The New York Times reports that President Barack Obama is in talks with Netflix to produce several “high-profile” shows which will give him a worldwide platform now that he’s no longer serving as acting President. The deal is not final at this time. Netflix would pay Obama and his wife Michelle an undisclosed sum for exclusive content for the service’s 118 million worldwide subscribers. The number of episodes and the format of the programs have not been decided.

One thing that is confirmed is that Obama does not plan to directly respond to President Donald Trump or any conservative critics. The Obamas have reportedly discussed producing shows that reveal inspirational stories. While it won’t be a direct response, it will give him an unrestricted line of communication with the public, similar to his social media reach. He currently has 101 million Twitter followers and 55 million on Facebook. The Times speculates that the Obamas could moderate conversations based on topics that were part of Barack’s presidency, but this is unconfirmed. It’s also possible they could endorse documentaries or fictional programming that aligns with their personal beliefs and values.

Throughout their lives, they have lifted up stories of people whose efforts to make a difference are quietly changing the world for the better. As they consider their future personal plans, they continue to explore new ways to help others tell and share their stories.”

Executives from Apple and Amazon have also had interest in talking with Obama for content deals, but nothing has happened yet.
