Buffy the Vampire Slayer Revival In Works At Hulu, Sarah Michelle Gellar Attached

In every generation a Slayer is born, and Hulu is ensuring such with a new Buffy The Vampire Slayer series reportedly in the works. THR reports that a follow-up is in development at the streaming service, with original star Sarah Michelle Gellar attached.
The new series is being created by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker Face, Fringe) and is being dubbed “the next chapter in the Buffyverse.” The site notes that according to sources, Gellar’s titular Slayer will not be the central character and the show will focus on a younger Slayer. Gellar will have a recurring role. Deadline has additional information, noting that Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) will direct the pilot, and that the series is close to a pilot order at the streamer. Hulu and 20th Television, who will produce, declined to comment on the news.
It is not yet clear whether other original cast members would return, but Deadline notes that it is considered likely.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer, created by Joss Whedon, was a major hit for Fox as a television show. A continuation of the Whedon-written 1992 film, it focused on Buffy Summers (Gellar), a teenage girl who learns she is the latest in a succession of young warrior women chosen to fight the forces of supernatural evil including vampires, demons and more. The show ran for seven seasons between The WB and UPN and was formative in paving the way for the rise of supernatural television, particularly those targeted at younger audiences.
Whedon is not involved in the new series. He has not worked in Hollywood since various allegations were made against him in 2020 of workplace harassment, inappropriate behavior and more on the set of Buffy and Angel, in addition to claims of abusive and unprofessional behavior on the set of Justice League.
The series has seen continuance following its final season in the form of comic books, and saw a successful spinoff in Angel which ran for five seasons on The WB. Various attempts to create TV and film spinoffs since have failed to coalesce.
