Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC Fight Night: Song vs. Figueiredo, I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be your host. The UFC is back in China for the first time in about 18 months and have brought fairly odd card. The main event is sort of relevant to bantamweight but both Song Yadong and Deiveson Figueiredo have lost to the very best and don’t seem like they’re breaking through any time soon. That said Song is younger and still has time to put some things together, and a big win in his home country would be a good way to start that push. As for genuinely interesting fights on the card beyond the main event we’ve got Kai Asakura returning to bantamweight, the return of Rei Tsuruya, the UFC debut of Xiong Jingnan, a couple of somewhat hyped prospects in Rodrigo Vera and Zhu Kangjie, and Sergei Pavlovich trying to get another shot at heavyweight gold. There’s also a lot of debutantes here tonight, which can be awkward at times. So while it’s up and down on paper let’s hope for some good action in practice.

UFC Fight Night: Song vs. Figueiredo comes to the world from the Galaxy Arena in Macau SAR, China. We’ve got Brendan Fitzgerald heading commentary along with Laura Sanko and Michael Bisping while Joe Martinez does the announcing and Heidi Androl does the roving reporter bit. We’re in the usual 30 foot cage and should have the newer rules in place, in fact one of the Road to UFC finals a couple days ago ended via gnarly knee to the head when one guy was against the fence and posted on a hand. I’ll update on the use of instant replay if that becomes relevant and is different than the usual rules.

Loma Lookboonmee has gone 7-3 in the UFC but most recently had a four fight winning streak broken by Alexia Thainara. Lookboonmee is trying to avoid her first losing streak. Jaqueline Amorim has gone 4-2 in the UFC but is coming off of a loss that broke her own four fight winning streak, now Amorim is trying to avoid her first losing streak and remind everyone that she’s a viable prospect in the division. Very close one here, -120 on Amorim to and even +100 for Lookboonmee.

Strawweight Bout: Jaqueline Amorim (10-2, 115.5 lbs.) vs. Loma Lookboonmee (10-4, 115 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Amorim is two inches taller with a significant six and a half inches of reach advantage. They touch gloves to get things going. Calf kick from Lookboonmee. Amorim pushes into a clinch on the fence. Lookboonmee avoids a few trips and off balance attempts but is struggling to to fight the grip. After a bit Lookboonmee does turn Amorim, Amorim rolls for a kneebar, that got dicey for a second and Amorim sits up into 50/50 guard. Amorim gets on top, the legs are still entangled but Lookboonmee is on her back and is struggling to get her hips in play. Eventually Amorim passes to side control. Amorim attacks an arm, she’s got a double wrist lock then sits for an armbar and is able to extend and force the tap as Lookboonmee’s elbow bends way the wrong direction.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Jaqueline Amorim via Submission, armbar, at 4:04 of Round 1

The First Round Finish Club thanks Ms. Amorim for her work. Mic time for Amorim and the translator, there’s also a translator for the crowd so this is a little daisy chained. Oh, Amorim speaks pretty good English so not so much. She puts over Lookboonmee then talks us through the finish, noting she had to get things away from the fence because Lookboonmee had good defense there. Asked about the future she wants a ranked opponent next as soon as possible.

Zhu Kangjie brings a five fight winning streak into his UFC debut, his last time out was over a year ago when he won a Road to UFC tournament and now he’s trying to make the most of his UFC debut. Rodrigo Vera is also making his UFC debut here, he’s got a very large 13 fight winning streak though and is looking to make the most of his chance at a first impression. This one closed as a -110 pick ’em.

Featherweight Bout: Rodrigo Vera (21-1-1, 145 lbs.) vs. Kangjie Zhu (21-4 1 NC, 145 lbs.)

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Vera for his work. Mic time for Vera, he appreciates this moment and he’s worked hard to get here then puts over the Chinese people for making this a great moment even though he beat their guy. He sends love to Peru in Spanish, then talks us through the finish to close.

Finish can be seen HERE.

Angela Hill has been around the UFC for a long time at this point and this represents her 30th fight with them. Hill is 41 and just 1-3 in her last four fights, now she’s trying to defend her ranking and prove she’s still got some juice left for the top of the sport. Xiong Jingnan is on a five fight winning streak coming into her UFC debut, she’s had a long career as well and is a former 125 pound champion in ONE Championship. SCORECARD: 10-9 Hill, 30-27 hill overall

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Angela Hill via unanimous decision (30-27 x3)

Mic time for Hill, she’s been working hard and figured out how she wanted to fight and getting a favorable stylistic opponent helped a lot. Asked about her success despite her age she just trains hard with very talented women so she takes less wear and tear than having to fight with a bunch of bigger men who would increase her injury load.

Rei Tsuruya had a fairly well established wrestling career and has gone 1-1 in the UFC, that one loss came to Joshua Van over a year ago and now he’s back after a couple of fights have fallen through and looks to get back on the winning side of things. Luis Gurule took this fight on short notice, hence two flyweights fighting at bantamweight, but he did just get his first UFC win two weeks ago and now looks for his first UFC winning streak. All things considered it’s not surprising to see Tsuruya as a pretty solid -340 favorite to Gurule’s +270 comeback.

Bantamweight Bout: Luis Gurule (11-3, 135 lbs.) vs. Rei Tsuruya (10-1, 135 lbs.)

Tsuruya with some punches, he’s got an assassin ride going and drops an elbow. More punches from Tsuruya, Gurule is blocking a lot of them but he’s got to address the position. Tsuruya gets the second hook in and attacks the choke. Gurule is leg pummeling and breaks the hooks, he’s able to stand with Tsuruya still on his back. Mat return from Tsuruya, Gurule pops up but Tsuruya is still on his back. Slowly Tsuruya attacks the legs, then jumps to the back with a body triangle, the choke is already in and while it’s across the face Tsuruya cranks things tight enough to force the tap.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Rei Tsuruya via Submission, rear naked choke, at 3:19 of Round 1

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Tsuruya for his work. Mic time for Tsuruya, we’ve go the full daisy chain translation here as we need both Mandarin and Japanese translators going. He notes how long he’s been off but he’s been working on that choke and transition and it went as expected. He was glad to show a bit of his striking work before going to his strength on the mat.

Aoriqileng has gone 4-4 with 1 No Contest in the UFC, he’s coming off of a win though and now looks for his first winning streak since 2022. Cody Haddon is on a six fight winning streak including a successful UFC debut, but that was in October of 2024. Now finally getting back to action Haddon is trying to extend his winning streak and stay more active going forward. Haddon is a pretty big favorite at -360 to Aoriqileng’s +280.

Bantamweight Bout: Cody Haddon (8-1, 135 lbs.) vs. Aoriqileng (26-12 1 NC, 135 lbs.)

Aoriqileng wall walks with Haddon on a hip, then Haddon trips him back down. Full back mount for Haddon and he’s after the choke, Aoriqileng has to hand fight but he’s able to get Haddon to bail on the choke. Some punches from Haddon land, he’s got Aoriqileng flattened out and looks to keep punching. Aoriqileng is scrambling enough to get one of the hooks out but he’s still kind of stuck and Haddon is throwing strikes. A few elbows now from Haddon, Aoriqileng’s right arm is tied up but he’s still working to wall walk. Aoriqileng has to settle for getting full guard. Elbow from Haddon. Aoriqileng looks to wall walk again, Haddon gets to the back and puts both hooks in briefly. Haddon is just a step ahead and is landing strikes when he gets openings to do so. OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Cody Haddon via TKO, knee to the body and punches, at 2:11 Round 2

Mic time for Haddon, he puts over Aoriqileng and didn’t want to stand in front of him then admits to panic wrestling. He says he’s super broke and really wants a bonus, you know he’s unlikely to get one when you beg for it as the UFC hates people talking about how badly they pay. He feels his performance wasn’t great and looks forward to fighting more open his next time out. To close he puts over his team and feels he’ll be fighting the very best soon.

Ding Meng is making his UFC debut here, he is coming off of a win but also lost on the Contender Series in 2024. Ding is going to be trying to make the most of his chance at making a first impression. Jose Souza brings a three fight winning streak into his UFC debut, he also had a loss on the Contender Series but his was back in 2022, and now tries to maximize his debut effort. Close one here, -130 on Ding to +110 for Souza.

Both men show stance switches, they prefer orthodox though. Jab from Souza. Solid one two from Souza, that got Ding’s attention. Ding lands a calf kick. Bit of a left hook from Ding then a calf kick. Souza goes southpaw for a bit, Ding lands a cut kick though and Souza goes back orthodox. Another calf kick from Ding. Jab from Souza. Ding is struggling with the range of Souza so he keeps throwing low kicks, which isn’t the worst idea but he’s got to build something off of that. Souza goes southpaw again so the calf kicks might be having a bit of an effect. Body jab from Ding as Souza returns to orthodox. Uppercut from Souza. Ding lands another calf kick. Glancing right hand from Ding gets Souza’s attention now. Souza’s switching pretty freely at this point. Right hand from Ding as he backs Souza to the fence. SCORECARD: 10-9 Ding but could go either way

ROUND TWO: They touch gloves again. Souza is mostly southpaw now it seems. Ding catches a front kick but nothing comes of it. Souza avoids a few punches but Ding is on the front foot now pretty consistently. Calf kick from Ding. They split jabs then Ding lands an inside leg kick. Souza is orthodox again and both men swing punches but a knee from Souza really bothers Ding, but Ding fires back with a left hook and both men reset. Souza checks a calf kick. Ding keeps up the calf kicks, doesn’t matter which stance Souza is in, he’s still chopping. Front kick from Souza goes low so we’ve got a time out. Replay shows the kick definitely hit the groin. Ding only takes 30 seconds then we’re back to fighting. Another calf kick from Ding. Souza shows jabs, he’s got a decent southpaw jab but his left hand isn’t as active. Bit of an up elbow from Souza. Ding is showing southpaw a bit now. Souza avoids a high kick. Ding lands a right hand. Another calf kick from Ding. Souza with a left hand. Right hand from Ding. Hard calf kick from Ding, then another one that bothers Souza for a moment. Jab from Souza. Bit of a right from Ding. Again Ding lands a right hand. Stiff jab from Souza. Ding lands another calf kick. Inside calf kick from Ding. Left hook from Souza as he avoids a few punches. Ding keeps pressing forward and Souza keeps circling. The crowd don’t like Souza’s evasiveness. Ding blocks a few punches then fires a right hand. Souza keeps just avoiding the fight for the final 10 seconds.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Souza but he might have given that one away late, 29-28 Souza overall

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Jose Souza via split decision (28-29, 30-27, 29-28)

Mic time for Souza and the translators, he says he’ll be champ as the crowd just boo him. He is happy and feels he did incredible work and puts over his team. To close he says he wants to be active.

Luis Felipe Dias is on a three fight winning streak including a Contender Series win last year, now he’s trying to make the most of his UFC debut with a memorable win. Bit of a calf kick from Dias. Lee jabs forward then lands a calf kick. Dias shows southpaw and misses a left hand. Lee lands a right hand. Calf kick from Dias. One two from Dias. Front kick from Lee but Dias then drops him to a knee with a right hand. The power Dias is bringing is bothering Lee a lot. They trade calf kicks. Leaping knee from Dias doesn’t quite land. Dias fires a high kick, it doesn’t land but he’s showing a lot of weapons. Calf kick from Lee. Dias swings a few hooks then drops Lee with a right hand, gets to the ride and fires enough punches to get the ref to step in.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Luis Felipe Dias via TKO, punches, at 3:40 of Round 1

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Dias for his work. Mic time for Dias and the translator, he wanted to trade punches and likes gritty fighting despite his grappling prowess and feels he’s only going to get better from here. He worked hard to get here and is motivated by his children back home.

Alex Perez has gone 2-4 in his last six though those losses were to top level fighters for the most part, and most recently he missed weight before stopping Charles Johnson. Perez did make weight here and now looks for his first winning streak since just before his title shot in 2020. Sumudaerji has gone 6-4 in the UFC but now finds himself on a three fight winning streak which has earned him this chance to take on a ranked opponent. A win here would be the biggest of Sumudaerji’s career and could start pushing him towards the title level. Another close fight here, -130 on Perez to +110 for Sumudaerji.

Flyweight Bout: Sumudaerji (19-7, 126 lbs.) vs. #11 Alex Perez (26-10, 125.5 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Sumudaerji is two inches taller with a significant six and a half inches of reach advantage. Southpaw for Sumudaerji and they touch gloves to get going. Perez misses a few calf kicks. Not much comes of the clinch and Sumudaerji fires an elbow as they break. Front kick from Sumudaerji, Perez blitzes on the counter and lands a couple of punches. Perez blocks a high kick. Jab from Sumudaerji. Bit of a left from Sumudaerji. Bit of a head kick from Sumudaerji. Perez keeps coming forward but the length of Sumudaerji is still giving him problems. Perez complains of an eye poke, he only takes a couple of seconds then we’re back to fighting. Glancing left hand from Perez but Sumudaerji avoids a tie up. Sumudaerji with some long range kicks. Left hand from Sumudaerji. Perez reaches for a double leg, Sumudaerji defends then misses a head kick as they both reset. Inside leg kick from Sumudaerji then a few jabs, nothing hard but he’s getting dialed in. Sumudaerji reaches for a double leg, Perez grabs a guillotine on the way down but Sumudaerji passes to the safe side. Perez tries to adjust but wont find the choke as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Sumudaerji but could go either way

ROUND TWO: Inside leg kick from Sumudaerji. Left hand from Sumudaerji drops Perez, Sumudaerji gets on top and looks for ground and pound. Perez is trying to tie up and maybe scramble, he’s slowing things down at least and will survive for now. Sumudaerji settles into half guard then stands free and makes Perez get up. Another left from Sumudaerji. Perez is trying to weave his way in close and unload hooks. Bit of an elbow from Sumudaerji, Perez does clinch up though. Nothing comes of the clinch again and things separate. Sumudaerji fires an inside leg kick, Perez took that in the groin though so we’ve got a time out. Perez wants a bucket, he’s dry heaving as the replay confirms the low kick. It was a glancing blow based on the replay but it clearly hit and sometimes those glancing ones are the worst. Perez is actually retching into the bucket, I can’t confirm what might be coming up but that’s a really bad look. After three and a half minutes Perez is still retching on occasion and isn’t even close to getting vertical. Yeah Perez can’t get up after the 5 minutes, and we’re gonna get a No Contest.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – No Contest, accidental groin kick, at 1:45 of Round 2

Unfortunate, that was starting to get pretty good.

Jake Matthews just had a three fight winning streak broken by Neil Magny of all people, despite being just 31 years old Matthews has been with the UFC since 2014 and if he’s ever going to make a serious push to the top of the division he really needs a win here. Carlston Harris is replacing Muslim Salikhov on short notice, he’s on a two fight losing streak and has been out of action since January of last year. Harris really does need to get back on the winning side of things here, short notice acceptance or not. Matthews is among the bigger favorites on the card at -450 to a +350 comeback on Harris, which might be a long shot bet but given Matthews’ history it could tempt a few degenerate gamblers out there.

Welterweight Bout: Carlston Harris (19-7, 170.5 lbs.) vs. Jake Matthews (22-8, 170 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Harris is half an inch taller with three inches of reach advantage, he’s also 7 years older. They touch gloves. Harris with some jabs and inside leg kicks. Left hook from Matthews mostly lands. Matthews lands a right hand. Bit of a right from Harris but he ate a couple punches to land that. Combination from Matthews. Both men land in close again. Combination from Matthews wobbles Harris as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Matthews, could be 10-8

ROUND TWO: Harris shoots, and winds up pulling guard. Matthews passes to half guard, then to mount and grabs at a mounted triangle but loses it and has to spin back to half guard. Harris tries for octopus guard, Matthews has grabbed the left arm of Harris though and that complicates things. Matthews lands a few punches and Harris goes back to half guard. A few punches from Matthews land. Arm triangle attack from Matthews now, Harris tries to counter with a guillotine attack and then both men kind of give up their attacks. Some short punches from Matthews then he passes to full mount. Arm triangle again from Matthews, Harris tries to use half guard but loses it. A little motion from Harris and he keeps himself in the fight, Matthews lands an elbow. Another elbow from Matthews as Harris fully gets half guard. Now Matthews attacks an arm, he gets the double wrist lock but gets swept and Harris is on top now. Harris elbows the body, Matthews is still holding the double wrist lock as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-8 Matthews but a borderline one, 20-17 Matthews overall

ROUND THREE: Matthews with a hard right hand early that floors Harris, and Matthews gets on top in half guard as hitting the mat seems to have woken Harris back up. Matthews attacks another arm triangle and moves to mount with that attack. Harris gives up the back and Matthews locks up a body triangle. Matthews fishes for the choke but doesn’t find it and switches to half guard on top as Harris was starting to escape. Harris is sort of trying to start a wall walk but Matthews is keeping him down so far. Some short punches from Matthews. A few elbows sneak in for Matthews as well. Another arm triangle attack from Matthews, the fence is complicating things but he’s got a lot of shoulder pressure going and uses that to pass to full mount but he loses the choke attack. Some punches from Matthews, he’s got Harris gift wrapped now and moves towards the back again. Matthews wont find a finish though as the round expires.

SCORECARD: 10-8 Matthews again, 30-25 Matthews overall

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Jake Matthews via unanimous decision (30-25, 30-27 x2)

Not giving Matthews a single 10-8 across those rounds feels wrong, even if only one he earned one in there. Mic time for Matthews, he’s happy to win and puts over Harris for taking the fight on short notice. He mentions staying on the ground to fight smartly, but also feels if he’d stood back up in the third he might have gotten the KO and a bonus for it.

Kai Asakura has gone 0-2 in the UFC, one of those being a flyweight title fight, and now he’s hoping a return to bantamweight will yield his first UFC win. Cameron Smotherman has gone 1-2 in the UFC and is on a two fight losing streak, he really needs to get back on the winning side of things here. The odds are with Asakura at -280 while a Smotherman win pays out at +225.

Bantamweight Bout: Kai Asakura (21-6, 135.5 lbs.) vs. Cameron Smotherman (12-6, 135.5 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Smotherman is an inch taller but the reach is identical. They touch gloves to get things going. Calf kick from Asakura. Both men with some range finding punches, nothing serious yet. The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Asakura for his work. Asakura gets an interview along with the translator, he tries English and mentions losing a couple of fights but feels happy and emotional at getting this win and is happy to finally show what he can do in the fight. He talks us through the finish, then when asked about the future he mentions he can fight anyone at any time.

Sergei Pavlovich has only lost professionally to Alistair Overeem, Tom Aspinall, and Alexander Volkov. Pavlovich is on a two fight winning streak and looking to defend his ranking while possibly earning another crack at the title, assuming heavyweight ever gets ordered properly. Tallison Teixeira has gone 2-1 in the UFC, wins over Justin Tafa and Tai Tuivasa sandwiching a pretty brutal loss to Derrick Lewis. Teixeira is looking for the biggest win of his career here and to get his first UFC winning streak. Pavlovich is a big favorite at -575 to Teixeira’s +425.

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Pavlovich for his work. Mic time for Pavlovich and the translator after that brutal blitz attack, he plays with the crowd a bit and they seem to like him. He wanted to get this knockout and now is ready for another title shot, or a serious contender fight if not that. Heavyweight is just a mess but I appreciate him putting his intentions out there. Asked about Pereira vs. Gane he doesn’t care who wins he just wants the winner and really wants the belt.

Zhang Mingyang had a long winning streak full of finishes come crashing down last year when he couldn’t get by Johnny Walker of all people to bring his UFC record to 2-1. Zhang is a pretty big star in China so the UFC is hoping he’ll rebound with a win here over a ranked opponent. Alonzo Menifield has gone 2-3 in his few fights, most recently he got stopped in the first round by Volkan Oezdemir and now he’s trying to avoid another losing streak. The odds are with Zhang at -275 to a +220 comeback on Menifield.

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Menifield for his work. Mic time for Menifield, he talks us through the fights and says he wasn’t going to go down after getting wobbled. He says the plan was always to get into a fight and he got Zhang out of there. He says he’s got to take care of his family, he grew up with no one and he will never let them down, then thanks God. When asked about the future he wants someone ranked in the top 10.

Song Yadong has a really good UFC record of 11-4-1 but those losses have pretty firmly established his ceiling at this point. Song is coming off of a loss to Sean O’Malley and if he’s ever going to really break through into the title picture he needs to avoid another loss here. Deiveson Figueiredo is a former two time flyweight champion and has done well for himself at bantamweight but now at age 38 and going just 1-3 in his last four fights he really needs to get back on the winning side if he’s going to prove he’s still a worthwhile addition to the top level of the sport. Song is the biggest favorite on the card at -600 to +450 for Figueiredo.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Song Yadong via Submission, guillotine choke, at 4:42 of Round 2

Mic time for Song as the crowd finally gets to be happy, he says it’s been 8 years since he fought in China and puts over the crowd and the moment. He talks us through the finish and puts over his team for all their work. Asked about the future he doesn’t care, he’ll fight whoever the UFC wants. Poor answer, but he’s already lost to pretty much everyone ranked above him and I’m not sure this performance made me rethink his chances against any of them.

Well on that note UFC Fight Night: Song vs. Figueiredo comes to a close. We’ll be unpacking all the fallout from this event on the 411 Ground and Pound MMA Podcast over on the 411 youtube channel. Plus looking ahead to more warehouse fights next week headlined by Belal Muhammad and Gabriel Bonfim. I’ll be back for that event and I hope you will as well.
