Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC Fight Night: Burns vs. Malott, I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be your host. I know this event will be flying under the radar considering it’s WrestleMania weekend but I appreciate you reading. This card isn’t really good on paper, but there’s a few fights here worth watching. In the main event Mike Malott is looking to make the leap from prospect to contender against grizzled veteran Gilbert Burns. Burns is trying to halt a losing streak that’s come against the best the division has to offer and a loss to Malott would be a pretty big indicator of his downward trajectory. The UFC debut of “Rat Garbage” Mandel Nallo against Jai Herbert sparks some interest, Jasmine Jasudavicius and Karine Silva battle for general title position, and on the prelims Mark Vologdin makes his UFC debut after his absolutely wild Fight of the Year last year. There’s a fair amount of dross too, but let’s hope the action overcomes the weakness on paper.

UFC Fight Night: Burns vs. Malott comes to the world from the Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. This is their first trip to Winnipeg since Lawler vs. dos Anjos in 2017. We’ve got Brendan Fitzgerald, Laura Sanko, and Paul Felder on commentary while Joe Martinez handles announcing and Heidi Androl is our roving reporter. I really like this trio on commentary so a week away from Cormier’s rambling or Bisping’s incessant need to be talking will be nice. We’ll be in the larger 30 foot cage, and I assume we’re under the newer rules but if Manitoba has some weirdness around that I’ll be sure to update things.

Jamie Siraj brings a two fight winning streak into his UFC debut, though interestingly his last loss was getting wheel kicked by UFC veteran Diego Brandao last year. Siraj is trying to make the most of his UFC debut, and it’s in his home country to boot. John Yannis dropped his UFC debut in August of last year and now hopes for a more favorable outcome in his sophomore bout. The odds are with Siraj at -260 to a +210 for Yannis.

Bantamweight Bout: Jamie Siraj (14-3, 136 lbs.) vs. John Yannis (9-4, 136 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: These two are the same height but Yannis has four inches of reach advantage. Southpaw for Yannis and they touch gloves to get things going. Some feinting from both men, Siraj is mostly orthodox but shows a few stance switches. Body jab from Yannis. Bit of a left hand from Yannis. Glancing right from Siraj. Left hand then a right hook from Yannis, Siraj is getting a little too loose with his stance switches and his defense from southpaw isn’t as good. Right hand from Yannis drops Siraj, he’s able to get on top but Siraj threatens a leg attack and they reset at distance. Front kick from Yannis. Yannis with a right hand that wobbles Siraj again. Yannis with a front kick then a knee to the body in close. Siraj just doesn’t seem to have an idea and keeps getting punched while shifting. Yannis with a right hand to knock Siraj down then he lands elbows on top to get the late stoppage.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – John Yannis via TKO, punches and elbows, at 2:43 of Round 1

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Yannis for his work. Mic time for Yannis and he gives glory to God then puts over Siraj, then says he knows he did the Canadian boy like that but hopes he earned some respect. The crowd do give him a bit of love. He talks us through the finish to close.

The finish can be found HERE.

John Castaneda has gone 4-4 in the UFC but he’s on a two fight losing streak and in fact hasn’t won since 2023, now he’s trying to get his UFC record back above the .500 mark. Mark Vologdin is coming off of a loss in his Contender Series fight, but it was almost the consensus Fight of the Year last year and now he’s looking to have a successful UFC debut. Close fight here, -160 on Castaneda to +130 for Vologdin.

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Herbert for his work. Mic time for Herbert, he plays with the crowd who are lukewarm, then asks for a bonus which he probably wont get now that he’s asking for it. He really wanted the finish and knew despite getting hurt he could get Nallo on the counter eventually. He talks us through the finish then says he hopes Nallo gets another shot in the UFC, there’s no quality control man he’s fine. Asked about the future he wants to stay active after a period of inactivity and knows that at 37 he’s running out of time.

Kyler Phillips has gone 6-3 in the UFC but he’s on a two fight losing streak, granted those losses are to Rob Font and Vinicius Oliveira but he still needs to halt that skid with a win. Fun fight overall, I’m a little surprised no judge gave Phillips the third as he had a lot of success that round. Mic time for Jourdain, he’s happy to win and puts over Phillips as an opponent. He says Phillips was tougher than he expected and he had to work hard to adjust things as the opponent was ready for him. To close he plays with the crowd a bit.

Gilbert Burns fought for the welterweight title back in 2021 and has been with the UFC since 2014. Burns is on a four fight losing streak but in his defense those losses are to Belal Muhammad, Jack Della Maddalena, Sean Brady, and Michael Morales so he’s only falling to the top of the weight class. That said if Burns can’t get back on the winning side of things here he’ll seriously need to consider hanging up the gloves. Mike Malott has gone 6-1 in the UFC and is on a three fight winning streak, this does represent a step up in class for him but a win would be the biggest of his career. The odds like Malott at -290 to a +235 comeback on Burns.

Mic time for Malott, he’s just the third Canadian to headline a show in Canada joining the ranks of Georges St-Pierre and Rory MacDonald, and he puts over Burns. The crowd cheer, never mind that a few minutes ago they were chanting “fuck you Gilbert” at him. He thought the uppercut could be a good tool and he tries to be prepared for anything Burns could throw at him. He talks us through the finish then gives some love to the crowd. To close he’s asked about the future and has no thoughts on who he’d like to fight next, he just wants to keep getting better.

They talk with Burns as well, he’s removed his gloves and sends love to his family in Portuguese before going back to English. He’s very emotional and says he worked very hard for this fight and with everything he put into this if he still can’t make that work in the cage he should maybe hang them up. He puts over Malott, the city, the UFC brass, and he thinks this is it for him. To close he mentioned all the great guys he’s fought and he’s content to end it here, he’s never turned down a fight, and his family get in the cage with him as the interview ends.
