God of War TV Series To Recast Ryan Hurst as Kratos Following Injury

Unfortunately, The Odyssey thespian Ryan Hurst will no longer portray Kratos in the upcoming live-action God of War television series. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon MGM Studios is going to recast the actor after he suffered an injury while filming a stunt, in which he tore his bicep.

Hurst’s injury paused production. Although the actor has already undergone surgery, the long recovery would cause further delays, forcing Prime Video to recast the show. THR notes that the show’s cast and crew were informed of the recasting decision yesterday (Jul. 16).

The series was initially greenlit in 2022, and it currently has a two-season commitment from Prime Video. Battlestar Galactica and Outlander scribe Ronald D. Moore serves as showrunner. Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun) is directing the two episodes.

The series will now need to undergo extensive reshoots, with production having begun months ago in Vancouver and four episodes already completed and in the can.

The series also stars Ed Skrein as Baldur, Callum Vinsson as Atreus, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, Danny Woodburn as Brok, and Mandy Patinkin as Odin.

God of War To Move Forward With New Actor as Kratos

Per Prime Video, the new series, based on the renowned, award-winning video game franchise, “follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”

There are no details yet on who will portray the new Kratos with Hurst’s recasting. Hurst previously portrayed the role of Thor in the God of War Ragnarök video game. He can be seen now in theaters in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, opposite Matt Damon and Tom Holland.

The God of War TV series is being produced by Sony Pictures and Amazon MGM Studios. Moore executive produces with Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia and Ben McGinnis are serving as co-executive producers.

Sony and Amazon MGM Studios are producing the show with PlayStation Productions and Moore’s Tall Ship Productions. It will stream exclusively on Prime Video at a later date.
