Ryan Hurst Officially Cast as Kratos in Prime Video’s Live-Action God of War Series

Prime Video’s upcoming live-action God of War series has found its Kratos. Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead alum Ryan Hurt will don the Blades of Chaos to become the legendary Spartan warrior in the new series, which comes from Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.

Hurt is no stranger to the God of War franchise. He portrayed the role of the Norse God of Thunder, Thor, in PlayStation’s God of War Ragnarök video game, so he has familiarity with the saga. The actor was previously nominated for a BAFTA Award for his in-game performance.

Per Prime Video’s press release on the announcement, Kratos is described in the TV series as follows:

“The titular character of the entire franchise, Kratos is Spartan by birth, and a god by nature. Raised in a martial culture, he rose to command armies in service of his homeland until one day he made a fateful deal with Ares, the Greek God of War and lost his soul in exchange for being victorious in battle. Over the course of ten wildly successful games, Kratos vanquished mortals, creatures and gods alike. In the process, he became an iconic character in pop culture, known for his stoic nature, unchallenged combat skills, and tragic past. In God of War, the live action series, his story will closely follow the path of the last two games as he deals with something new: his ten year old son Atreus. This father and son dynamic began a whole new chapter in the legendary series and will be the heartbeat of the new show.”

The series has been in the works for a while, with the series being first announced over three years ago in December 2022. Based on the character description, the new series will be adapting more from the Norse saga of the game series, when Kratos seeks a more redemptive path to set a better example for his son, Atreus.

God of War Live-Action TV Series Moving Into Pre-Production in Vancouver, Casting Underway

Per Prime Video, the series has already received a two-season order, and pre-production is currently underway in Vancouver, with casting having begun as well. Now that the series has found its Kratos, it will be interesting to see who the show finds as Atreus and the other Norse deities.

God of War will depict Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos seeks to teach his son how to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.

Director Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun, The Boys, Fallout) will direct the first two episodes of the series. Ronald D. Moore serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer.

Additional executive producers include Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis are co-executive producers on the series.

God of War does not yet have a debut date. The show will stream exclusively on Prime Video later on.
