AMC’s premium horror streaming service Shudder has announced that it has acquired the rights to the digital series Critters: A New Binge, a new series that picks up where the films left off. It will premiere on March 21 with eight episodes from Warner Bros. Television Group’s digital studio, Blue Ribbon Content.

Here’s a synopsis: The horror-comedy series picks up the tale of the Critters, everyone’s favorite hairy, carnivorous, insatiable aliens from the beloved film franchise. Pursued by intergalactic bounty hunters, the Critters return to Earth on a secret mission and encounter lovelorn high-schooler Christopher (Joey Morgan, Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse), his crush Dana (Stephi Chin-Salvo, iZOMBIE), his best friend Charlie (Bzhaun Rhoden, Van Helsing), and his mom Veronica (Kirsten Robek, The Edge of Seventeen), whose past will come back to bite them—literally.

The series also stars Gilbert Gottfried and Thomas Lennon. Jordan Rubin, Jon Kaplan and Al Kaplan wrote the scripts and will executive produce with original film series creators Rupert Harvey and Barry Opper, as well as Ivana Kirkbride and Chris Castallo. Rubin will also direct the series.

Peter Girardi (Executive Vice President, Blue Ribbon Content, and Executive Vice President, Alternative Programming, Warner Bros. Animation) said: “It’s been more than 30 years since the Critters first landed on the big screen, and we’re incredibly proud to bring this cult classic franchise back to fans. Shudder is the perfect platform for this fun, scary new take on everyone’s favorite, furry extraterrestrial threat. We are committed to delivering Shudder members the best horror content available and this time we are also bringing the laughs.

The Critters series began with a feature film in 1986 that starred Dee Wallace, M. Emmet Walsh and Scott Grimes. It received three sequels, concluding with Critters 4 in 1992. That film went straight to video. The series is also notable for featuring one of Leonardo DiCaprio’s first acting roles, as he appeared the lead role in Critters 3 in 1991.
